Woodhouse Lane Gateway

About the project

To improve everyday life across the city, tackle climate change and improve health and wellbeing, we’re investing in our transport infrastructure to make Leeds safer for people walking, wheeling* and cycling.

This supports our transport strategy for Leeds to be ‘a city where you don’t need a car’ to get around, where everyone has an affordable and accessible zero carbon choice in how they travel and aiming to increase walking by 33% and cycling by 400% by 2030.

We want to hear your thoughts on issues around the Woodhouse Lane Gateway, which is a busy leisure and commuter route for people travelling to and from the city centre and the Hyde Park and Woodhouse areas.

The Woodhouse Lane Gateway is a 2km route running along Woodhouse Lane and Albion Street from St Mark’s Road to the Headrow in the city centre. The area is home to the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University, Leeds Arts University and leisure and hospitality businesses like The Light, Merrion Centre and St John's Centre. The scheme also covers the southern end of the A660, which links the city centre to Hyde Park and Headingley.

*Wheeling incorporates many methods for getting around, including using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking aids and travelling with a pram or pushchair.

Woodhouse Lane Gateway location

The number of people walking, cycling and using the bus around the Woodhouse Lane Gateway is higher than the Leeds average, but it can be difficult to travel around the area on foot or by bike, and the area suffers from congestion which can delay journey times.

We want to make it safer and easier for people to get around the Woodhouse Lane Gateway in sustainable ways (like walking, cycling and using public transport) whilst enhancing the look and feel of places along the route.

Around the wider Woodhouse Lane area:

  • There are up to 27 buses per hour in each direction (during peak times)

  • 49% of people travelling use the bus, compared to a Leeds average of 29%

  • 5% of people travelling cycle, compared to a Leeds average of 2%

  • 15% of people travelling walk, compared to a Leeds average of 7%

*2019 data collected on the A660.

By letting us know what you think the current issues are, we will be able to prioritise improvements to make the area a more welcoming gateway for travelling through and spending time in.
