Travel to Work Survey

The travel to work survey is an annual survey that helps us to identify commuting trends and helps us to inform future transport investment decisions.

The survey also helps businesses and organisations to meet travel plan obligations at individual places of work.

The 2025 survey ran between 6th March and 18th April 2025

Summary survey results

The survey received 5,194 individual responses in 2025, made up of 1,319 (25.3%) responses from Leeds City Council employees and 3,876 (74.6%) responses from employees of other business and organisations.

  • 37% of people reported driving by themselves to work in Leeds, this is an increase of 4% compared with 2024. The level remains substantially lower than the historic high of 47% in 2014.
  • Active modes of travel (walking, wheeling and cycling) continue to increase jumping to 14% of commuter journeys, up from 9% in 2024.
  • The proportion of people working from home continues to decrease, at 23%, compared with 24% in 2022. This was as high as 36% at the peak of the pandemic.
  • 40% of commuters now travel to their place of work 5 days a week, up from 33% in 2024. Although Tuesday remains the busiest day for travelling into the office, the variation between other days, except Friday is less than previous years
