Consultation results

Thank you to everyone that fed back on our proposals for Beckett Street. The consultation ran from 27th August until 8th October 2024. 2,372 people visited the Commonplace site, and 301 surveys were completed.

Below are the main findings from feedback received from online surveys, paper surveys at events, and emails received.

Overall sentiment

Overall sentiment chart

Overall, 64% of respondents supported the proposals, 14% felt neutral and 22% of respondents felt negatively towards the scheme.

Free text comments

When ranking the overall sentiment for the scheme, users were able to use the free text box to expand on their feedback. The key themes that emerged from the free text comments are made up of:

  • General support for the proposed improvements, that will enhance the area and make it safer and more accessible
  • Concerns over increased congestion and pollution, especially during construction
  • Good support for bus and pedestrian proposals
  • Reservations regarding the loss of mature trees in the area (please see the 'Why are you removing trees as part of this scheme?' on our FAQ page for further information).
  • Concerns about potential loss of parking spaces
  • Mixed support for cycle lanes, some felt there was too much emphasis placed on the lanes in comparison to the number of cyclists in the area, while others supported the proposals but wanted the designs to be more ambitious
  • Concerns around pedestrian safety, especially for vulnerable groups
  • Some comments stating funds should be redirected to healthcare or road maintenance (please see the 'Why not use this funding for more important problems?' on our FAQ page as to why this isn't possible).

Do you feel the proposals will help meet the scheme objectives?
