Dawsons Corner

The Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass improvement scheme is moving another significant step closer to completion, with a major programme of final road surfacing taking place during November.

The work will take place between Monday 9 November and Sunday 29 November, with a series of overnight lane and road closures required across Dawsons Corner and surrounding routes. As road surfacing can be affected by poor weather, the programme may be subject to change, with contingency dates built in where required.

Works will take place between 8pm and 5am, with roads and lanes reopening each morning.

What’s happening?

The surfacing will be carried out in phases across different parts of the junction, Bradford Road, Stanningley Bypass and Owlcotes Lane.

The first phase, from 9 November, will involve overnight lane closures on approaches to Dawsons Corner while the roads are prepared for their final surface.

From 12 November, the main surfacing programme will begin, with different sections of the junction and surrounding roads closed overnight as work progresses.

The maps and plans below show where we’ll be working and the diversion routes that will be in place during each phase.

9–17 November

Works will begin around Dawsons Corner, including the route towards Stanningley Bypass. Access arrangements for New Pudsey Station will change during some of these works, with access via Woodlands Avenue where required.

Where we'll be working: 12-17 November (14/15 contingency)

17 November

For one night, the A647 Bradford Road eastbound will be closed from Thornbury Barracks roundabout through Dawsons Corner to the Woodlands Avenue junction on B6157 Bradford Road. The Owlcotes Lane slip road towards New Pudsey Station will also be closed, with access to the station via Woodlands Avenue.

18–22 November

Surfacing will continue along the Stanningley Bypass, with overnight closures affecting the northbound route. Access to the Ederoyd estate will be available via Galloway Lane during the closure.

Where we'll be working: 18-22 November (21/22 contingency)

23–29 November

The final phase will see surfacing completed across the remaining areas of the scheme, with further overnight lane closures around Dawsons Corner and a closure of Owlcotes Lane.

Some residential street entrances will also be affected temporarily while surfacing takes place.

Residents and businesses directly affected by access restrictions will receive separate information explaining the arrangements for their street or property.

Please plan ahead

Delays are possible during the overnight works, so please plan ahead, allow extra time for your journey and follow the signed diversion routes.

Businesses will remain open during the works.

Some noise is unavoidable while road surfacing takes place. Our teams will work as considerately as possible and take steps to minimise unnecessary noise.

Getting closer to the finish line

The new road layout and improvements across the junction are now clearly taking shape.

Following the main surfacing programme, some additional overnight works will take place between 30 November and to the end of December, with resident access maintained.

We will also continue with the finishing touches across the scheme, including final adjustments to the new traffic signals, landscaping and tree planting.

Thank you to residents, businesses and everyone travelling through Dawsons Corner for your continued patience while we complete these final stages.
