Maintaining quieter residential streets to support safer walking and cycling

With lower traffic levels during lockdown, we have seen more people with the confidence to walk and cycle around our towns, cities and neighbourhoods. However, as the government restrictions are lifted, traffic volumes are likely to increase again, particularly if there are fears or pressures on the use of public transport.

We would like to protect communities from this increase, by maintaining quieter spaces for walking and cycling on residential streets. This will help people to continue to socially distance. We would like to consider "low traffic neighbourhoods" using point closures or "modal filters" to remove through traffic from residential areas. In the fist instance we will use temporary barriers or planters to close the road.

We would like your views of these trial measures and if they prove successful and are a positive change for neighbourhoods, we will endeavour to make them permanent over time.

Your voice is essential in order to successfully

  • Make the road safer and more attractive for all
  • Encourage more residents and visitors to walk and cycle in the area
  • Improve access to other areas in the locality and local amenities
  • We welcome your ideas. You can start by having your say on this website

All of the feedback received from the consultation will be carefully analysed and considered as part of our final designs.

Select ' Have your say ' and let us know your thoughts on cycling and walking in the area!
