Lawnswood Roundabout: new traffic signals now in operation

Work continues at Lawnswood Roundabout as the scheme moves towards completion.

New traffic signals
The new traffic signals are now switched on and being tested. The signals will be monitored and fine-tuned in live traffic conditions to help optimise traffic flow around the junction. Drivers may notice adjustments to the timings during this testing period.

Other works
Landscaping preparations and footway surfacing are progressing, alongside work associated with the new variable message sign

The contractor also continues to work with Leeds City Council and Northern Powergrid on the issue affecting the underground electricity cable and will provide further information when available.

Thank you for your continued patience while the remaining works are completed.

Lawnswood Roundabout major improvements take shape

The Lawnswood Roundabout scheme continues to move forward, with major elements of the project now nearing completion. While some final works are still required, residents and road users will soon start to see the full benefits of the investment, including new traffic signals, improved landscaping and upgraded facilities around the junction.

Works are continuing across multiple areas of the site as we move towards completion of the scheme.

Traffic signal installation is progressing well, with signal poles, heads and associated cabling being connected to the main communications network. Additional work to install road sensors and equipment within the carriageway is also ongoing. The new traffic signal system is expected to be commissioned and operational within the next fortnight.

Landscaping work is also advancing. The new rain garden at the centre of the roundabout is ready for planting, while preparation of the remaining landscaped areas will continue over the coming week. Planting of bulbs, shrubs and grass seed will then begin. The feature tree remains at the nursery and will be planted once it reaches dormancy.

Following the completion of utility works by BT, we are continuing with kerbing works across the site ahead of final footway surfacing in several locations. The new bus shelter is also scheduled to be installed in mid-November.

Unfortunately, an issue has been identified with an underground electricity cable in the area. We are working closely with the council and Northern Powergrid to assess the situation and agree the best way forward, while doing everything we can to minimise disruption for local residents and road users. This may require some additional work on the A660 southbound approach. Thank you for your continued patience and support while we work through this issue. We will keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Final preparations under way as Lawnswood Roundabout scheme nears completion

The transformation of Lawnswood Roundabout is now in its final stages, with many of the improvements now clearly visible and most of the major construction work complete. The new-look junction is really starting to take shape, giving a glimpse of how the finished scheme will improve journeys and make it easier and safer for people walking, wheeling, cycling and travelling through the area.

Over the coming weeks, work will focus on the finishing touches, including completing the final pedestrian crossing, installing and testing the new traffic signals, carrying out landscaping works within the new rain garden, and finishing footway and tactile paving improvements. The new bus shelter is also currently being built off-site and will be installed as part of the final phase of the project.

We know the works have taken time and we'd like to thank local residents, businesses and everyone who travels through the area for their patience and understanding while these improvements have been delivered.

Major milestone reached as final surfacing completed

A major milestone has been reached on the Lawnswood Roundabout improvement scheme, with the final phase of overnight surfacing now complete. This marks significant progress towards delivering the new-look junction, with the majority of construction work now finished and attention turning to the final stages of the project.

Over the coming weeks, teams will complete remaining kerbing, footway and cycleway works, road markings and drainage connections across the site. Installation of the new traffic signal equipment is also getting under way, helping the final layout of the roundabout become more visible. Signal commissioning and testing is currently scheduled for around the third week of October.

We would like to thank residents, businesses and everyone travelling through the area for their continued patience while these improvements are delivered. The scheme remains on track to move into its final completion stages this autumn.

Lawnswood final surfacing works

18 September Update on final surfacing Lawnswood roundabout

The revised date for the surfacing works will take place from 7pm Monday 21 September to 6am Saturday.

They were originally unable to be completed as planned due to a combination of wet weather conditions and issues affecting the supply of materials required for the works.

The area being surfaced is the south-east corner outside Weetwood Hall. Diversions will be in place and there will local access only.

This week work has continued with surfacing footways and cycleways, this will continue next week along with line marking under lane closures.

We would like to apologise to residents, businesses and road users for the additional delay to the completion of the Lawnswood roundabout improvement scheme and thank everyone for their continued patience.

10 September Lawnswood update

Work on the Lawnswood roundabout improvement scheme is now at an advanced stage, with the majority of construction work complete and significant improvements already visible across the junction.

The final surfacing works were unable to be completed as planned due to a combination of wet weather conditions and issues affecting the supply of materials required for the works.

We are currently reviewing the programme and coordinating with other planned works in the area before confirming a revised date for the surfacing works. A further update will be provided once arrangements have been finalised.

In the meantime, additional line marking works will be undertaken under lane closures where necessary.

There are also several important elements of the scheme still to be delivered, including the installation and commissioning of the new traffic signals, which are expected to become operational in October.

Landscaping works will continue throughout the autumn, with tree planting planned for November.

Once complete, the scheme will provide lasting improvements to safety and connectivity for people walking, wheeling, cycling, using public transport and travelling through the junction, helping to support more reliable journeys and a better-connected local transport network.

We would like to apologise to residents, businesses and road users for the additional delay to the completion of the Lawnswood roundabout improvement scheme and thank everyone for their continued patience.

Upcoming night works

As the project reaches its final stages, we need to carry out carriageway preparation and resurfacing works around the roundabout on all four approaches.  These works will take place throughout August and into early September. Most of these works will be undertaken during night-time working hours.

Plan ahead lane closures

As part of the ongoing improvements at Lawnswood roundabout, we need to carry out essential drainage works beneath the carriageway.

From Monday 6 July until Friday 24 July, the nearside lane will be closed on the A660 southbound approach to and exit from the roundabout, as well as on the eastern side of the roundabout.

To allow the works to be completed safely and efficiently, these lane closures will remain in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the three-week period. However, work within the carriageway will generally take place during our standard working hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm.

We appreciate that these closures may cause some disruption and encourage everyone travelling through the area to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.

Thank you for your patience while we carry out these improvements.

Please see the plan below for further information:

29 June

In area nine (c) outside Weetwood Hall, the road crossing points are being constructed so that power can be installed safely. Sewer connection works will be soon in this area.

In phase four, outside Lawnswood School we are progressing with footpath works, including installing a dished drainage channel behind the kerbing. Signal pole installation is ongoing in this area.

In phase seven by the police station / sub-station, we are working north towards the station exit, preparing for kerb installations.

In phase six we are starting to install kerbs and traffic signal poles.

Upcoming night works – advance notice

During August and into early September there will be substantial carriageway works. This to prepare the subsurface of the new roadways, which will take place in sections around the roundabout, on all four approaches. It will be planned and will involve road closures with diversions. We are required to do these night works from Mondays – Fridays, so that there is no disruption to Leeds events, including the Iron Man and Leeds Festival weekends.

The final surfacing works are scheduled for early September and will require full overnight closures on all approaches to the roundabout.

At present we are working with our subcontractors to align a programme which minimises disruption where possible, and the traffic management team to finalise diversion routes. We will issue further updates about this, together with diversion route plans.

We fully recognise the works will be disruptive to local communities and we will ensure information is circulated as soon as possible. The works are essential and need to be done in a certain way to ensure correct surfacing, quality and longevity. Thank you in advance of your patience and understanding.

Feedback

As ever, we continue to welcome feedback which allows us to work closely with you during the project. You can contact us at any time at LawnswoodEnquiries@ericwright.co.uk

Feedback

There have been a lot of queries about the shape of the roundabout and why it isn’t round, including some comments that we might be building it incorrectly. The shape of the old roundabout, alongside the new, can be seen on the Leeds City Council website via the following link:

https://lawnswoodroundabout.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/v3/about-the-scheme?step=step1

The shape of the new roundabout is carefully designed to guide traffic into the correct lanes and support the enhanced safety of the design.

We continue to welcome feedback which allows us to work closely with you during the project. You can contact us at any time here: LawnswoodEnquiries@ericwright.co.uk

We started a new working in area three (south central reserve) and in area five (west central reserve).

The photo shows the central reservation, where we are stripping the topsoil to establish ground conditions. We have found remnants of the old road under this area and are adjusting our works to take account of this surface.

16 March

In area two (roundabout centre) we have received some positive feedback around the new lining and hope this is working well for everyone using the roundabout.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall) the Yorkshire Water diversions are continuing. They will be moving over to start works soon on the corner near the police station.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road we continue to work on the new pedestrian crossing area, temporary pedestrian crossing signals will follow shortly.

Temporary Traffic Regulation Order

On the A6120 Ring Road the speed limit has been revised to 40mph. The reason for the speed limit is to provide a ‘crash cushion’ between works at the roundabout and other works in the area. Regulations state that between two work areas there must be sufficient space for drivers to adjust to speed limit changes.

9 March

This weekend in area two (roundabout centre) we have carried out substantial re-lining works to assist with lane discipline, including an intermittent marked lane.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall) Yorkshire Water continue to lay pipes for their new diversion, while Northern Gas move a live gas stub which was preventing the completion of the highway drainage.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, excavations have been completed ready for the installation of new kerbs and tactiles for the new crossing. We are awaiting the removal of the existing bus shelter. We will be installing a temporary push light pedestrian crossing here afterwards and removing the existing crossings.

Temporary Traffic Regulation Order

On the A6120 Ring Road the speed limit has been revised to 40mph.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to drive safely at the roundabout and in the surrounding areas during the works.

We continue to welcome feedback which allows us to work closely with you during the project.

Lawnswood roundabout construction

2 March

In area two (roundabout centre) all the kerbing is now installed, together with the paving and service strip which allows for maintenance of the area. The rain garden channel is prepared and installed.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall) Yorkshire Water are continuing their work. Although they have hits snags in this area, they are progressing well with the diversion pipework.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, works continue and we hope the barriers are helping pedestrians to cross safely.

Yorkshire Water have completed their night works. Thank you for your patience during the works.

Upcoming works

Next weekend (7/8 March) we may be continuing with lining works at the roundabout. These will be carried out overnight to minimise disruption.

Temporary Traffic Regulation Order

On the A6120 Ring Road the speed limit was reduced to 30mph. This was due to other works in the area which also carried a reduction to 30mph, and due to the need for coordination between the two temporary orders, the one relating to the Lawnswood roundabout scheme also had to be reduced for safety reasons. This will be revised to 40mph imminently.

23 February

In area two (roundabout centre) the final kerbing is being installed, together with the channel that encompasses the rain garden. We are preparing for installation of the grid type base and paving for the rain garden.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall) Yorkshire Water have installed road crossings for the necessary diversion, by the substation area.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, the carriageway has also been widened for the new bus stop, and the bus operator is now using this new area. We have installed barriers to assist safe crossing routes for pedestrians.

Reminder of upcoming works – Yorkshire Water

Yorkshire Water have been working day and night on the ring road crossing and finish four nights early. The last night shift on these works will be Monday (23 February). Thank you for your patience during the works.

Weekend working 28 February / 1 March

As we move out of the central island, we need to amend the existing traffic management. To facilitate this, we have relining works planned for this coming weekend (weather dependent) when traffic flows will allow the works to take place safely.

16 February

Last weeks’ work focused on activities that allowed us to lay new surfacing to the roundabout and new bus layby on Otley Road.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall) we have continued with ducting work and the area has been widened.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, the carriageway has also been widened for the new bus stop, and the bus operator is now using this new area.

Weekend works took place to alter the road alignment on the roundabout in order to open up new working areas.

Reminder upcoming night working – From Monday 16/02/26 (for two weeks) – Yorkshire Water

Starting Monday 16 February, Yorkshire Water will be installing a new pipe across the ring road from the old police station towards Weetwood Hall hotel. Works will be carried out to minimise the impact between Mondays to Fridays, starting at 8pm and completing by 5am. Any works which create significant noise will be completed by 10pm. After this, excavation works will continue, however these are not expected to create significant noise, in addition to normal traffic flows.

9 February

This week work has temporarily paused in the roundabout centre (area two) while we concentrated on area one (outside Weetwood Hall). In this area we have completed the gulley connections and installed kerbs.

In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, we have carried out bearing load testing, and laid type one stone, which is compacted to provide a base for tarmac sub layer. We have excavated for the kerbing in the new bus layby. The Lawnswood School bus stop will move to its new position (heading towards Leeds city centre) on the 12 February.

Upcoming night working – From Monday 16/02/26 (for two weeks) – Yorkshire Water

Starting Monday 16 February, Yorkshire Water will be installing a new pipe across the ring road from the old police station towards Weetwood Hall hotel. Works will be carried out to minimise the impact between Mondays to Fridays, starting at 8pm and completing by 5am. Any works which create significant noise will be completed by 10pm. After this, excavation works will continue, however these are not expected to create significant noise, in addition to normal traffic flows.

2 February 2026

In the roundabout centre (area two) we have continued installing the new kerb lines and laying the tegula paving. This splash strip allows for a mowing margin and avoids the build-up of detritus in the area. We are also installing the entries to the rain garden area.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall), the drainage works are continuing. In area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Road, where we have started construction of the new bus stop. This includes widening the area for the new layby.

The current completion date for the works is during the first two weeks of September. As this is still sometime away, it is subject to change as the work progresses. The contractor Eric Wright continually reviews the programme, with the council to ensure successful and delivery, while adjusting for variable changes. These may include delays due to the inclement weather or unforeseen underground services, but likewise an earlier completion date could be achieved, through efficiency and long periods of good weather.

Lawnswood roundabout roadworks

In the roundabout centre we pushed forward with the new kerb lines and laid the tegula paving that serves as a splash strip at the back of the kerbs.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall), we have excavated for the gully connections and started excavating for the drainage outfall pipe.

We have also started works in area nine on the southbound leg of the A660 Otley Rd, where we have started construction of the new bus stop.

We have received feedback about the roundabout lane delineation markings and roads leading up to it, along with requests to make these clearer. As the lanes change frequently during the project, this can create issues with the white markings showing through, which happens particularly at dusk and during night hours. This can potentially exacerbate the problem.

We are grateful for the feedback as ever, and will continue to be mindful of this, amending where possible as work progresses.

19 January 2026

In the roundabout centre we are continuing to install the drainage pipes in readiness for connection to the main network. We have partially excavated for the new rain garden area, leaving 150mm of surcharge which we’ll remove during final planting.

In area one (outside Weetwood Hall), all the oversized pipework is now installed. We now look forward to making the gully connections.

We have received some feedback about the general site appearance and positive comments about the disruption during the works, being less than people expected. We welcome all comments and continue to work with everyone to minimise inconvenience wherever possible, while we complete the works.

12 January 2026

This is our first update of 2026.

Progress has continued in the first working week on the oversized pipework adjacent to Weetwood Hall Hotel and installation of ducting, drainage and gullies in the roundabout centre.

Tree removal works took place prior to the break, on the A6120. These were cherry trees removed due to Ganoderma fungal disease which affects the tree trunk. They were carried out by the council’s Parks and Country team. Although not to do with these works, we know this may be a point of interest to people who are familiar with the roundabout.

15 December 2025

We are making great progress on the roundabout centre, where the drainage work is almost complete. The crew from this area have now moved across to phase one for further oversized drainage works, and a new team is now working in the central area.

We will be making gulley connections into the pipework next week. This includes some bricklaying works, and installing the manhole covers. These are top drilled which provides vents to release pressure to keep the installation safe.

The work in phase eight (central reservation of the eastern arm) is also going well. The stone and kerbing have been finished, and we are planning on surfacing this area next week.

The next update will be 12 January 2026.

Below is a recent image from the end of November.

8 December 2025

Roundabout construction activity

Last week we continued installing the oversized pipe work in the central roundabout. We have completed manhole two and are proceeding towards manhole one. The hydro break is now in place – this slows the flow of water when required (for example during heavy rainfall), before it is discharged into the Yorkshire Water system. This is part of the attenuation system, designed to reduce the impact of large volumes of water on the wider network.

In phase eight (central reservation of the eastern arm) we are continuing excavations. Last week the area tested favourably for stability and bearing capacity, despite the wet conditions. We are starting to place the stone and lay kerbs in this area.

1 December 2025

Last week we carried out the concrete pour on manhole two, which is where the oversized drainage starts. New gulleys are connected into manhole eight, and we are continuing to remove spoil from the roundabout centre.

In area one, outside Weetwood Hall, the footpath has now been tarmacked up to the binder course, with the finishing surface to go on at the very end of the scheme. Whilst in this area we have graded back the grass verge, as 20 years of grass cuttings had left the area high and uneven. We hope this is a noticeable improvement.

We are also back in phase eight (central reservation of the eastern arm), digging this area out ready to assess and test the grounds stability and bearing capacity. This will give engineers confidence that the design is appropriate for the ground conditions.

In phase one the two disused gas pipes have been drilled by Northern Gas to confirm they are dead and will be removed shortly once we move into this area to start installing the drainage.

Please see recent aerial photographs, showing the centre of the roundabout and the improvements to the pathway.

24 November 2025

Last week we continued work on the gulley connections in the roundabout centre into manhole six. The larger manhole rings are on their way for the oversized pipes. We continue to work with statutory providers, now including BT, to ensure we can complete our installations around existing services.

In area one outside Weetwood Hall we have installed the edgings and are stoning up this area. Northern Gas Network are attending to some disused pipework in this area so we can continue our works.

Yorkshire Water are continuing works on the northern arm, these are due to be completed soon.

At the end of last week, we undertook some emergency works around the roundabout, including clearing detritus from the road and reorganising lining. This was completed during night shifts to minimise disruption.

Unfortunately, there has been some vandalism of the temporary tower lighting which is disappointing. The purpose of this is to help keep the area lit and safe, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. We are rectifying this issue and hopefully there will be no recurrence.

We have received some feedback around traffic queues during hours where lanes are restricted, and how best to join the ongoing traffic lane without being seen to “push in”.

Here is guidance from the Highway Code Rule 134, which says: "In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed."

Below are aerial pictures of the works from mid-October.

17 November 2025

Last week we continued work on the manhole installations in the roundabout centre. Despite finding further uncharted utilities to work around we are pleased to report this is not affecting programmed. Manhole eight installation is going well and progress in this part of the works remains good,

Ducting excavations have been completed outside Weetwood Hall and backfilling to finish this part of works is underway.

On the Northern arm, Yorkshire Water have commenced works and this is estimated to take 2-3 weeks. We understand traffic flows have been relatively unaffected by these works to date.

10 November

Last week we continued work on the manhole installations in the centre of the roundabout. Manhole six is installed up to the concrete lid, with brickwork to be installed. Further oversized pipework excavations are taking place, along with installation of foundations.

Ducting excavations are taking place outside Weetwood Hall.

At points during excavations there’s bedrock which contains water pipework. Works must be carried out carefully to ensure existing services are identified and to manage risk. The contractor often uses vacuum excavation which is a safer, more environmentally friendly, and often faster method of excavation that uses powerful suction to remove soil and debris.

Instead of traditional digging, it uses high-pressure air or water to loosen the soil, which is then sucked through a hose into a debris tank on the truck. This protects both the workforce and minimises the risk of damaging underground utilities.

3 November

Last week we completed the surfacing works around the roundabout centre. Yorkshire Water have inspected the manhole and is progressing well (see picture below).

Our sub-contractors are installing kerbing to the eastern arm, near Weetwood Hall, and also on the southern side.

The further temporary lighting column to the south / south east corner has been installed, hopefully to improve visibility.

Below are aerial pictures, showing the oversized drainage install currently taking place on the roundabout centre.

Lawnswood roundabout manhole

28 October 2025

Last week we continued works on the roundabout centre, and have undertaken some surfacing works, as well as concreting around the manhole rings so we can start bringing the manhole out of the ground.

Our sub-contractors have been working on the kerbing and footway ducting on the A6120, ring road West Park (outside Weetwood Hall).

We are installing a further temporary lighting column to the south / southeast corner to provide more illumination, after removing the existing lighting columns.

Public liaison boards have been put up on the Weetwood Hall boundary, opposite Lawnswood School. These will carry information about the scheme, the team, and regular updates.

17 October 2025

This week we are continuing works on the roundabout centre. We have now resolved the design issues with Yorkshire Water.

Sub-contractors are continuing kerbing and footway ducting on the A6120 ring road Weetwood (outside Weetwood Hall).

We hope the relocation of the mobile pedestrian crossings has been helpful. We welcome any feedback on the new positions.

Yorkshire Water works

Yorkshire Water will be commencing works on Saturday 25 October, on the western side of the roundabout on the A6120 Outer Ring Road, by the junction with Wynford Avenue. This work will take approximately two weeks and will involve a lane closure, which will be in place continuously throughout their work (24 hours, every day).

This is planned work in preparation for their collaborative works with us on the roundabout for the diversion of the fresh water supply. They may be in touch with residents directly in respect of the works.

These lane closures are separate from the 930am – 330pm standard working which is currently being undertaken. Please plan ahead and allow extra time on some journeys, especially during the busiest times in the morning and evening.

Thank you for your continued patience during the works.

10 October 2025

This week we are continuing works on the roundabout centre, preparing for the deep drainage works. We continue to liaise with Yorkshire Water to resolve design issues in this area.

Eric Wright sub-contractors have commenced kerbing and footway ducting on the A6120.

On Wednesday evening (night works) the mobile pedestrian crossings were relocated, further away from the roundabout, in line with feedback received. We welcome any feedback on the new positions.

3 October 2025

This week we are continuing works on the roundabout centre, preparing for the deep drainage works.

We are working with our supply partners to resolve design issues.

Work is ongoing to relocate the mobile pedestrian crossings; this involves some overnight work and is scheduled to be complete by the end of next week.

26 September 2025

This week we are continuing works on the roundabout centre, the Eastern arm approach and the Southeast quadrant of the roundabout.

On the roundabout we have discovered further uncharted services and alongside Leeds City Council are working on design revisions, and with our water supply partners, to resolve.

We have installed some new kerb lines within the roundabout, ahead of future works.

Work is ongoing to relocate the mobile pedestrian crossings.

19 September 2025

This week we have uncovered further undocumented services within the scheme boundary which we are working with partners to resolve.

We are continuing works on the roundabout centre, the approach to the Eastern arm and the Southeast quadrant of the roundabout.

Work began to relocate the mobile pedestrian crossings last night 18.09.25.

5 September 2025

This week we have continued with Phase 1 of our works, and commenced Phase 2, beginning works on the roundabout island.

We have now found further unexpected underground services, notably a live gas pipe. This presents an issue with our drainage system design, so we have paused work in this area. Site visits and investigations have been conducted alongside Northern Gas network. Revisions are now being discussed.

By way of update, regarding the mobile pedestrian crossings, our revised proposals are awaiting approval, with implementation once these are received.
