Fixing fashion with Make Mee Studio

Make Mee Studio is a sewing school based in Crofton Park library. They run friendly classes for children and adults, helping people learn to make, mend and love their clothes again.

Fashion is one of the world's most wasteful industries. Teaching sewing and repair skills can help reduce waste, and make clothes last longer. Make Mee's free fixing sessions around the borough have helped residents during the cost-of-living crisis. Repaired winter coats and favourite jumper have saved many more from being bought new. They've so far helped 250 people mend over 300 items at the free mending workshops.

Crafting and sewing are also proven mindfulness activities, helping to boost mental health. The Make Mee team have found it creates opportunities for people to bond - with classmates sharing knowledge across cultures and generations. Using the Repair, Reuse, Recycle Grant, Make Mee held free mending workshops in Lewisham Shopping Centre. These sessions brought together young people, and older residents looking to refresh their skills. Workshops were created in partnership with Circle Collective - another social enterprise working with local young people at risk of unemployment.

Make Mee Studio’s long-term goal is to give more people the confidence to repair rather than throw away. They're helping to make Lewisham a place where fewer clothes end up in the bin, and more people feel connected through creativity and caring for the environment.
