School Streets
As part of our commitment to encourage walking and cycling we have been working with Transport for London to create safer, quieter and healthier spaces near our schools. Over the last four years we have introduced School Streets at 51 schools.
The area near to the school gates are often busy and congested at the start and end of the school day, causing concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.
The School Street programme is designed to help pupils, parents/ carers and residents by creating a quieter and safer environment by restricting the number of vehicles able to enter the road at the school drop off and pick up times.
School Streets have many benefits, by limiting the number of vehicles near the school gates there will be an improvement to the general environment, air quality and road safety at the school gates, the restrictions also help to encourage daily routines that incorporate active travel modes. The scheme also helps to reduce the impact of the school run for those that live in the immediate vicinity of the school gates.
