St John's and Tanners Hill

Our proposals

We want to understand your views on the traffic management interventions, and how these might impact you, whether you live in the area, use it to commute or just travel through regularly. We're also interested in where you might want to see upgrades to public realm, new crossings or other improvements, so we can prioritise the work that makes the biggest difference to local residents.

Proposed interventions

We want your thoughts on the following proposed interventions, which have been broken down by category. You can also find this information on our Interactive Map, which you can access by visiting the project homepage.

Modal Filters

A modal filter is a barrier that stops specific types of traffic from passing through to a road, while allowing other types of traffic to do. Typically, this involves preventing motor vehicles from accessing a road, while ensuring cyclists and pedestrians remain able to pass through.

We are proposing modal filters restricting vehicle traffic in the following locations:

  1. Between Florence Road and Heald Street
  2. Between Heald Street and Albyn Road
  3. At the junction of Albyn Road and Friendly Street
  4. At St John's Vale, between Albyn Road and Cliff Terrace

School Streets

A School Street is closed off to motor vehicle traffic at drop off and pick up times during school terms, to make it easier and safer for children to get to and from school.

We are proposing new school streets in the following locations:

  1. Admiral Street
  2. Strickland Street
  3. Albyn Road, between Friendly Street and St John's Vale

New and Improved Crossings

Crossing points makes crossing roads safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists, and by extension for drivers.

We are proposing new and improved crossing points in the following locations:

  1. A new raised parallel or zebra crossing point on Amersham Road, between Parkfield Road and Lewisham Way
  2. A new raised parallel or zebra crossing point on Florence Road, between New Cross Road and Heald Street
  3. An improved cycle crossing point at New Cross Road, linking Alpha Road and Mornington Road
  4. An improved pedestrian crossing point at Deptford Broadway, linking Harton Street and Deptford Church Street, and an improved cycle crossing point to the immediate east
  5. A new raised parallel or zebra crossing point on Friendly Street, just before the junction with Albyn Road
  6. A new raised parallel or zebra crossing point on Brookmill Road just after the junction with Friendly Street, and a further new crossing on Brookmill Road to the south, between St John's Vale and Lind Street

Traffic Calming

Traffic calming is the physical design of roads to encourage drivers to slow down, improving safety for more vulnerable road users. This can include speed bumps, speed cushions, chicanes and other methods. The exact mechanism used would be confirmed during the detailed design process, but all seek to achieve similar goals.

We are proposing new traffic calming measures in the following locations:

  1. Amersham Road, between New Cross Road and Parkfield Road
  2. Amersham Road, toward the junction with Lewisham Way
  3. Florence Road, between Heald Street and Alpha Road
  4. Florence Road, between Alpha Road and Lewisham Way
  5. Brookmill Road, between Seager Place and Friendly Street
  6. Brookmill Road, between Elverson Road and Albyn Road
