Transforming Deptford High Street - December 2024 Update

Update on the proposed designs

In autumn 2024, we presented initial proposals for Deptford High Street improvements to local businesses, traders, and youth and community groups. Through design workshops, on-site visits, and a dedicated survey for businesses, we aimed to gain an understanding of business's needs such as loading and parking and capture feedback from key stakeholders to help shape the future of the high street.

Based on the feedback we received, we are making changes to the design proposals and will share these with the wider community in early 2025, where there will be a public consultation on the updated proposals.

How we are improving the high street in the meantime?

Through engagement, we understood that many people shared concerns about the overall safety and cleanliness of the high street. To address these, we have started on some immediate next steps.

Our environmental team is visiting the high street weekly to identify any fly-tipping. Thanks to this, they have already issued warnings to sixty businesses who are not disposing of their commercial waste properly and issued two fines related to fly-tipping on the high street. As well, our design team have identified waste management as a key priority for future design proposals for Deptford High Street.

In addition, we are:

• working with Network Rail to replace the netting under the railway bridge to deter birds and reduce mess
• increasing enforcement patrols to make parking fairer and more efficient
• removing unused and damaged parking signs
• removing graffiti from street lighting
• hosting a workshop with young people to explore public art opportunities and deter future graffiti
• undertaking high pressure cleaning of the high street
• regularly street cleaning, including manual, daily sweeping and a machine sweep on Sundays and or Bank Holidays. Waste is to be collected every day of the week in the morning and afternoon and the graffiti team is to visit each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
