Overview of tthe 2022 goals achieved and the process for 2023

Every January, the City Council holds a priority setting session to discuss the work plan for the year ahead. In collaboration with the commission, committees and staff, the Council prioritizes what they believe the Town’s priorities should be beyond the day-to-day operations that Town staff commits to delivering every day. The staff works closely with the committees and planning commission to construct a draft work plan that is presented and eventually adopted by City Council. That plan helps shape the FY 2023-24 Budget that is approved in May 2023. The City Manager provides updates in the middle and end of the year, and the process repeats in January of the following year.

Last year, the City Council focused their work plan in four priority areas:

• maintaining quality of life and community character
• promoting public safety
• increasing effective service delivery and governance
• protecting and maintaining the Town’s infrastructure

Within these four priority areas, there were 56 milestones for 2022. Each milestone represents a significant work product that takes a concerted effort of the City Council, staff and commission and committees, and sometimes budget. With Council’s support and staff’s hard work, over 70% of the 2022 milestones were completed as of December 2022, with the remaining either being in a state of progress or scheduled to begin work. The remaining projects that are ongoing have been automatically rolled over into the 2023 work plan.

Work for the 2023 Priority Setting Session began in September 2022. Staff began talking internally about the projects that need to be completed in the upcoming year, attending standing committee meetings to collect goals for each committee and working with the Council to understand their individual interests as well. On January 11, 2023, the Town committees will present their goals to Council for the upcoming year, then will meet with City Council to prioritize the work place for the year on January 25, 2022.
