Solid Waste Management Plan Update

Metro Vancouver is updating its solid waste management plan to guide how waste and resources are managed across the region in the years ahead. The current Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (2011) is focused on avoiding waste wherever possible and recovering value from materials before disposal. The updated plan builds on this foundation to better support waste prevention, recycling, climate action, and a circular economy.

The plan has been shaped through several phases of engagement. During the Vision and Guiding Principles phase, residents and stakeholders shared values and priorities that informed a new vision: a thriving region where nothing is wasted and resources are valued. In the Idea Generation phase, Metro Vancouver collected ideas for potential actions, which helped inform updated goals and a revised waste hierarchy. The Options Analysis phase refined these ideas into draft strategies and actions based on feedback from advisory committees, First Nations, government, member jurisdictions, businesses and non-profit organizatons, and the public.

We are now in the Draft Plan phase. This is an opportunity to review and provide input on the draft updated solid waste management plan, including proposed strategies, targets, and performance measures. Your feedback at this stage will help finalize the plan before it is submitted to the Province of British Columbia for approval.
