7/17/26 Construction Update

Apple Avenue Redesign

The contractor on the M-46 Reconstruction project is wrapping up another couple of weeks of hard work onsite in some not so favorable weather conditions. They made great progress with underground utility installation in Stage II near Getty St, and road building work is progressing behind them. Detailed information on work that was completed, upcoming work, and traffic control can be found below:

Project Activities:

Work Completed:

  • Water main and sanitary sewer installation complete between Kenneth & Getty
  • Storm sewer construction completed between Kenneth & Getty
  • Utilities in Pine St intersection complete
  • Sand and aggregate base complete in Pine St intersection
  • Sand and aggregate base constructed from Wood St to near Kenneth
  • Concrete curb, sidewalk, and drives ongoing from Pine St to the east

Upcoming Work:

  • Restore lawn areas between sidewalks and curbs in Stage I
  • Stage I (First St through Terrace St): First St, W. Muskegon Ave, & Terrace St are all open to traffic, M-46 (Apple Ave) remains closed between W. Muskegon Ave & Terrace St while the contractor completes work in that area and will get it opened as soon as possible.
  • Continue constructing new concrete curbs, sidewalks, and driveways in Stage II between Terrace & Getty
  • HMA Paving from Pine St towards Getty
  • Close & reconstruct Wood St intersection. This will be completed once Pine St is re-opened
  • Irrigation Systems: The contractor has been provided a list of known locations within Stage I where the irrigation systems are damaged due to construction. They are working on getting a subcontractor onsite to perform these repairs.
  • Additional Update: Beginning Monday, July 27, construction crews are scheduled to have one northbound lane and one southbound lane open at the Getty Street, Allen Avenue, and Ada Avenue intersections with Apple Avenue. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through at least Saturday, August 1. Please note that no turning movements will be allowed at Apple Avenue during this phase of construction. Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes when possible

Construction schedules can often change, but we will do our best to provide up-to-date information in each update.

Access to Properties

Access to properties will be maintained unless active construction is occurring in front of your driveway. If you have any questions or concerns about where to park or how to access your residence or business, please contact the on-site inspector (Brent Johnson with MDOT) at 616-204-7850. Please feel free to also reach out to me at 616-827-4284.

Services to Properties

Trash – Please place your trash containers at the curb as you typically would for pick up. The contractor will label your container with your address and move them to the nearest open cross street for pick up. After pick up is complete the contractor will then move your container back to the curb in front of your property.

Mail – Your USPS mail service will not be interrupted, so there is no need to worry about not receiving any mailings.

Delivery Services - You will always be able to receive deliveries or packages to your property during the project. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding a delivery, please get in touch with me, and we will help facilitate those needs.

Emergency Services – Access to your property will be maintained during construction for all emergency services. If you have additional needs during this time, please share those needs or any concerns with me. Please let me know if you experience any issues so I can follow up.

Traffic Control

M-46 (Apple Ave) continues to be closed between W. Muskegon Ave and Terrace St, however, First St, W. Muskegon Ave, and Terrace St are all now open to through traffic. EB M-46 traffic should follow the detour shown in the Stage II map below.

Stage II Construction is ongoing between Terrace St and Getty St. This area will be fully closed to through traffic with access maintained for businesses and residents to access their properties.

Detour routes for Stage II will be as follows: EB M-46 will use W. Webster Ave to US-31BR (Moses J Jones Pkwy), to SB US-31, to the M-46 (Apple Ave) exit. WB M-46 traffic will use S. Getty St to Laketon Ave, to US-31 BR (Seaway Dr), to W. Webster Ave. The Stage II map below shows the additional area that will be closed and the detour routes for traffic.

NOTE: The Pine St intersection is scheduled to be opened to through traffic on MONDAY 7/20 at which time the Wood St intersection will then be closed.

Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes. Accidents can and do happen, and our goal is to have zero issues throughout the project. This will take everyone's diligence, so please be sure to use caution and be very observant when driving through the project area. If you notice any detour issues, please share them with me so our team can review and address them if necessary.

Thank you to the residents and businesses directly impacted by the reconstruction work. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and communication during the project! The project team is committed to an efficient, safe, high-quality project.
