10/2/26 Construction Update

Apple Avenue Redesign

October is here and thankfully mother nature has given us mostly good weather for the contractor to continue to make progress on the M-46 Reconstruction project! Underground utility work is mostly complete now and the contractor continues to reconstruct the new road between Getty St and Home St. Detailed information on work that was completed, upcoming work, and traffic control can be found below.

Project Activities

Work Completed:

  • Closed the north half of M-46 (Apple Ave) between Creston & Home St and removed existing pavement
  • Completed sanitary sewer installation to Creston St
  • Completed storm sewer installation from Oak Grove to Creston
  • Placed sand and gravel base form Getty to Oak Grove
  • Completed new concrete curb from Getty to Oak Grove
  • Paved asphalt base course between Getty & Oak Grove
  • Began construction of concrete sidewalk and driveways between Getty & Oak Grove

Upcoming Work:

  • Complete construction of new concrete sidewalk and drives from Getty to Burton
  • Place topsoil, seed, and mulch between Getty & Burton
  • Place asphalt base course from Oak Grove to Burton and likely pave leveling course of asphalt in the same location
  • Finish underground utility installation between Creston & Home
  • Place and grade sand and gravel base from Burton to Creston
  • Construct new concrete curbs, sidewalks, and drives from Burton to Creston

Construction schedules can often change, but we will do our best to provide up-to-date information in each update.

Access to Properties

Access to properties will be maintained unless active construction is occurring in front of your driveway. If you have any questions or concerns about where to park or how to access your residence or business, please contact the on-site inspector (Brian Folkema with MDOT) at 616-278-5818. Please feel free to also reach out to me at 616-827-4284.

Services to Properties

Trash – Please place your trash containers at the curb as you typically would for pick up. The contractor will label your container with your address and move them to the nearest open cross street for pick up. After pick-up is complete the contractor will then move your container back to the curb in front of your property.

Mail – Your USPS mail service will not be interrupted, so there is no need to worry about not receiving any mailings.

Delivery Services - You will always be able to receive deliveries or packages to your property during the project. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding a delivery, please get in touch with me, and we will help facilitate those needs.

Emergency Services – Access to your property will be maintained during construction for all emergency services. If you have additional needs during this time, please share those needs or any concerns with me. Please let me know if you experience any issues so I can follow up.

Traffic Control

M-46 (Apple Ave) is closed to through traffic between Getty St and Creston St, the road is open to traffic between Getty St and First St. The current detour for eastbound and westbound M-46 (Apple Ave) is to use Laketon Ave, and it is shown on the map below.

NOTE: On Monday 10/5/26 M-46 (Apple Ave) will be fully closed from Creston St to Home St. Creston St itself will be closed between Allen Ave and M-46 (Apple Ave) but driveway access will be maintained for homes/businesses. Westbound M-46 (Apple Ave) local traffic should use Home St to Allen Ave.

Access to homes and business will be from side streets/alleys or if access is not possible by that method, then access will be maintained for you on M-46 (Apple Ave).

Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes. Accidents can and do happen, and our goal is to have zero issues throughout the project. This will take everyone's diligence, so please be sure to use caution and be very observant when driving through the project area. If you notice any detour issues, please share them with me so our team can review and address them if necessary.

Thank you to the residents and businesses directly impacted by the reconstruction work. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and communication during the project! The project team is committed to an efficient, safe, high-quality project.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at ryan.stone@collierseng.com or 616-827-4284, thanks!
