Apple Ave (M-46) Reconstruction: Project Update Email

Hard to believe that it’s been just over a month already since work began on the project, but the weather has cooperated and the contractor is making good progress.

Apple Avenue Redesign

Good afternoon!

Hard to believe that it’s been just over a month already since work began on the project, but the weather has cooperated and the contractor is making good progress. Hopefully, everyone is able to enjoy the upcoming Memorial Day long weekend with friends and family and to make getting around somewhat easier work on M-46 (Apple Ave) will be suspended from 3:00 pm today until 7:00 am next week Tuesday May 26th. During that time the current closures will remain in place, but no work will be occurring, and no materials will be delivered to or from the project so construction traffic around town will be non-existent. Information on what work has been completed, what work is upcoming, and traffic detours can be found below!

Access to Properties

Access to properties will be maintained unless active construction is occurring in front of your driveway. If you have any questions or concerns about where to park or how to access your residence or business, please contact the on-site inspector (Brent Johnson with MDOT) at 616-204-7850. Please feel free to also reach out to me at 616-827-4284.

Services to Properties

  • Trash – Please place your trash containers at the curb as you typically would for pick up. The contractor will label your container with your address and move them to the nearest open cross street for pick up. After pick up is complete the contractor will then move your container back to the curb in front of your property.
  • Mail – Your USPS mail service will not be interrupted, so there is no need to worry about not receiving any mailings.
  • Delivery Services - You will always be able to receive deliveries or packages to your property during the project. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding a delivery, please get in touch with me, and we will help facilitate those needs.
  • Emergency Services – Access to your property will be maintained during construction for all emergency services. If you have additional needs during this time, please share those needs or any concerns with me. Please let me know if you experience any issues so I can follow up.

Traffic Control

Stage I construction required closing M-46 (1st St) between W. Webster Ave and Sanford St. W. Muskegon Ave will also be closed from 3rd St to Jefferson St. during this stage. The intersections on M-46 at 1st St, Jefferson St, and Sanford St will also be closed to traffic.

Eastbound M-46 traffic is currently detoured using 3rd St to W. Webster Ave, to Terrace St. Westbound M-46 traffic is detoured using Terrace St to W. Muskegon Ave or W. Webster Ave. The map below graphically shows the area that will be closed and the proposed detour routes:

Stage II Construction is ongoing between Terrace St and Getty St. This area will be fully closed to through traffic with access maintained for businesses and residents to access their properties.

Detour routes for Stage II will be as follows: EB M-46 will use W. Webster Ave to US-31BR (Moses J Jones Pkwy), to SB US-31, to the M-46 (Apple Ave) exit. WB M-46 traffic will use S. Getty St to Laketon Ave, to US-31 BR (Seaway Dr), to W. Webster Ave. The Stage II map below shows the additional area that will be closed and the detour routes for traffic.

Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes. Accidents can and do happen, and our goal is to have zero issues throughout the project. This will take everyone's diligence, so please be sure to use caution and be very observant when driving through the project area. If you notice any detour issues, please share them with me so our team can review and address them if necessary.

Thank you to the residents and businesses directly impacted by the reconstruction work. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and communication during the project! The project team is committed to an efficient, safe, high-quality project.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at ryan.stone@collierseng.com or 616-827-4284, thanks!
