Apple Ave City Commission Discussions – May 12 & 13, 2025

Two important resolutions related to the Apple Avenue Redesign will be discussed during the City Commission

Two important resolutions related to the Apple Avenue Redesign will be discussed during the City Commission Worksession on Monday, May 12 and considered for adoption at the City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, May 13:

1. Resolution of Support for the Design of Apple Avenue
City staff is recommending adoption of a resolution expressing support for MDOT’s current design of Apple Avenue and the associated costs the city will cover. The current project design includes:

  • A five-lane roadway from Creston to Roberts
  • A three-lane roadway from Roberts to Terrace
  • A two-lane section from Terrace to Webster

This is a change from a previous design showing two lanes from Wood to Webster. The city is formally expressing support for a three-lane section from Getty Street to Terrace Street to minimize impacts on emergency response times for the Public Safety Department.

The city's cost share includes utility work, required statutory contributions, and enhancements like the multi-use path along the south side of Apple Avenue. These are included in the proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget.

2. Resolution of Support for City Ownership of Apple Avenue
Staff is also recommending adoption of a resolution expressing the city's support for taking ownership of Apple Avenue after MDOT's 2026 reconstruction project. Ownership would give the city more flexibility over future improvements and design changes along the corridor.

Residents are encouraged to attend or watch the May 12 worksession to hear a presentation on these project updates.

A formal agreement between MDOT and the City is expected in Fall 2025, following the project letting.
