8/14/26 Construction Update

Apple Avenue Redesign

The Apple Ave Reconstruction project began back in mid-April so we’re just about at the 4-month mark from when things got started and in that time the contractor has made a ton of progress constructing new utilities and rebuilding the road. Detailed information on work that was completed, upcoming work, and traffic control can be found below.

Project Activities

Work Completed:

  • Concrete sidewalk and driveways completed to near Getty St
  • Asphalt base course paving complete from Wood St to near Getty St
  • Getty St intersection fully closed and new utilities constructed
  • Topsoil placement, seeding, watering completed from Terrace St towards Getty St
  • Contractor closed M-46 (Apple Ave) from Getty St to Creston to begin Stage III work

Upcoming Work:

  • Complete construction of sand and aggregate base in the Getty St intersection
  • Construct new curbs and sidewalks at the Getty St intersection
  • Asphalt base course in Getty St intersection on Monday 8/17, leveling course of asphalt from Wood St through Getty St also on 8/17
  • Begin replacement of sanitary sewer at the Oak Grove intersection
  • Construct new storm sewer from Getty heading east towards Oak Grove
  • Asphalt top course pavement scheduled for 8/20 & 8/21
  • Adjust manhole castings and water valve boxes from Terrace St to Getty

Construction schedules can often change, but we will do our best to provide up-to-date information in each update.

Access to Properties
Access to properties will be maintained unless active construction is occurring in front of your driveway. If you have any questions or concerns about where to park or how to access your residence or business, please contact the on-site inspector (Brian Folkema with MDOT) at 616-278-5818. Please feel free to also reach out to me at 616-827-4284.

Services to Properties
Trash – Please place your trash containers at the curb as you typically would for pick up. The contractor will label your container with your address and move them to the nearest open cross street for pick up. After pick-up is complete the contractor will then move your container back to the curb in front of your property.

Mail – Your USPS mail service will not be interrupted, so there is no need to worry about not receiving any mailings.

Delivery Services - You will always be able to receive deliveries or packages to your property during the project. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding a delivery, please get in touch with me, and we will help facilitate those needs.

Emergency Services – Access to your property will be maintained during construction for all emergency services. If you have additional needs during this time, please share those needs or any concerns with me. Please let me know if you experience any issues so I can follow up.

Traffic Control

M-46 (Apple Ave) continues to be closed to through traffic between First St and Creston St, and the intersection at Getty St will remain closed for a couple of more weeks. Terrace St, Pine St, Wood St, and Creston St are all open to through traffic while M-46 (Apple Ave) is closed. The current detour for eastbound and westbound M-46 is to use Laketon Ave, and it is shown on the map below.

When reconstruction of the Getty St intersection is complete it too will be opened to through traffic. The opening of the Getty St intersection will be communicated to local residents/stakeholders via email as will any other upcoming traffic changes. Access to homes and business will be from side streets/alleys or if access is not possible by that method, then access will be maintained for you on M-46 (Apple Ave).

Please continue to be cautious and aware of detour routes. Accidents can and do happen, and our goal is to have zero issues throughout the project. This will take everyone's diligence, so please be sure to use caution and be very observant when driving through the project area. If you notice any detour issues, please share them with me so our team can review and address them if necessary.

Thank you to the residents and businesses directly impacted by the reconstruction work. We appreciate your patience, understanding, and communication during the project! The project team is committed to an efficient, safe, high-quality project.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at ryan.stone@collierseng.com or 616-827-4284, thanks!
