Muskegon Lighthouses project progress, November 2023
Work continues on the city's federal application for ownership of both Muskegon's South Pierhead and South Break Water Lighthouses along with seeking contractors for South Break Water restoration work in 2024.
The city continues to work with Sanders & Czapski Associates of Marquette, MI to complete the city's application for lighthouse ownership under the National Lighthouse Preservation Act. The city is seeking ownership of the South Pierhead and South Break Water Lighthouses at the request of the non-profit owner Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy. Sanders & Czapski -- a historic preservation firm -- may also assist the city in seeking a contractor for renovation work on the South Break Water Lighthouse in 2024. The city has received an $800,000 state grant though Michigan Economic Development Corp. for work on the South Break Water Lighthouse. Meanwhile, the informal Friends of the Muskegon Lights had a successful season of tours of the Muskegon South Pierhead Light concluding with a Holloween event on Oct. 21. The group will use the winter to engage the community in the future work of interpretation and preservation of Muskegon's two historic lighthouses.
