Getty Street Corridor Initiative

The City of Muskegon’s Economic Development Department invites you to join us for an ongoing series of Getty Street Business Roundtables. These sessions are held quarterly, typically on the last Wednesday of the month at 12:00 PM, and provide an opportunity for business owners and property stakeholders along the corridor to connect with one another and with city staff.

At each session, we continue conversations about the future of Getty Street and explore tools that may support long-term investment, including the potential formation of a Corridor Improvement Authority (CIA) or a Business Improvement District (BID). These tools are designed to help fund and coordinate corridor-wide improvements through local collaboration. A CIA or BID allows for funding to be reinvested directly into the corridor to support improvements such as:

• Beautification and streetscape enhancements
• Marketing and events
• Infrastructure and accessibility upgrades

While both tools support similar types of improvements, they operate differently. A CIA reinvests increases in property tax revenue as property values rise, while a BID is funded through a locally determined special assessment approved by property owners.

We want to hear directly from the Getty Street business and property community. For those unable to attend in person, a corridor improvement checklist survey will be available online (details coming soon). This will help us better understand shared concerns and priorities across the corridor.

• Pedestrian safety
• Sidewalk maintenance and snow removal
• Streetscape and infrastructure needs
• Shared marketing and corridor identity

The idea of a CIA or BID is not predetermined — it depends on interest and direction from engaged business and property owners. These conversations typically begin with stakeholders coming together to explore shared goals and next steps, often leading to the formation of a business association as a foundation for future action.

The city’s role is to listen, facilitate, and support. If there is interest in pursuing a CIA or BID, we will work together to identify next steps and guide the process.
