Lakeshore Drive Road Rehabilitation 2026

Lakeshore Drive Rehabilitation
From Beach Street to Sherin Street (Roundabout to Frosty Cove)
Timeline: March 2026 – November 2026

The Lakeshore Drive Rehabilitation Project will be completed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: March through Memorial Day
  • Phase 2: After Labor Day through November

The road will remain open to traffic between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The City will rehabilitate Lakeshore Drive from Beach Street (the roundabout) to Sherin Street (Frosty Cove). This includes:

  • Lead service line replacements and utility upgrades (Consent to Access Form)
  • Full repaving throughout the project area
  • Reconstruction of the roadway from Cottage Grove (Balcom’s Cove) to Edgewater (The Vikings)

From Cottage Grove to Edgewater, Lakeshore is being redesigned to reduce pavement while maintaining three travel lanes (including a center turn lane). The seldom-used parking lane on the Muskegon Lake side will be removed to expand greenspace, improve safety, and calm traffic—supporting a more scenic, bike- and pedestrian-friendly experience.

The City recognizes that all major infrastructure projects come with temporary inconveniences. We also understand the importance of Lakeshore Drive as one of just two vehicle and bike routes to Lake Michigan. That's why construction has been scheduled to preserve full access during the peak summer season.

Outside that window, you may encounter:

  • Temporary lane and road closures
  • A temporary detour for the bike path
  • Event-related impacts
  • Potential delivery delays

We’re committed to minimizing disruptions and keeping the community informed throughout the project. Residents, businesses, and visitors are encouraged to attend the upcoming public meetings to ask questions and share feedback. You are also welcome to call the Public Works team with any questions at 231-724-4100.
