Nantucket Receives a $4 Million MassWorks Infrastructure Program Grant

Nantucket, Massachusetts – The Town of Nantucket has been awarded a $4,000,000 grant through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ MassWorks Infrastructure Program, as part of the fiscal year 26 Community One Stop for Growth funding round. The grant will support the Surfside Area Transportation Improvements project, a key infrastructure initiative that aims to improve safety and mobility in one of Nantucket’s busiest corridors.

The Surfside Area Transportation Improvements project is intended to address long-standing transportation needs in the Surfside area, including safer connections for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, major upgrades to drainage infrastructure, and better access to nearby neighborhoods and public facilities.

“This award represents a significant investment in one of the most heavily traveled areas of the island,” said Public Works Director Andrew Patnode, who is overseeing the Surfside Area Transportation Improvements project. “This very important project will provide 2 miles of safe transportation facilities for the benefit of all residents and visitors.”

The $4 million MassWorks grant will help reduce the Town’s borrowing needs and avoid approximately $5,035,938 in debt service over 15 years ($4 million in principal and about $1.035 million in interest). This MassWorks grant, coupled with $3.2 million in Chapter 90 funds, brings the total local financial benefit to nearly $8.2 million. Combined, these funds from the Commonwealth will cover about 40% of construction costs.

Work associated with the grant will proceed in coordination with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Economic Development (EOED). A member of the state’s team will work directly with Town staff to complete the contracting process.

The MassWorks Infrastructure Program, administered through the Community One Stop for Growth, provides funding for public infrastructure projects that support housing, job creation, and community development.
