WHAT IS BEING BUILT?

This section addresses questions about the size, licensed capacity, location, and design considerations for the proposed new Our Island Home facility.

How many beds are planned for a new facility?
Forty-five. Currently, the OIH is licensed for 45 beds by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Through a process called “Determination of Need”(DON) which will need to be filed with the DPH by the Town, the DPH determines the number of skilled nursing beds available state-wide and will evaluate our request.

Why are we building 45 beds in the Island Home?
The current license with the Department of Public Health (DPH) is for 45 beds, and the new facility will have an all private/single room occupancy design. Maintaining the current licensed occupancy provides for a seamless and timely approval by the state DPH. There will also be 12 rooms designed to be expandable to semi-private rooms with a larger square footage in each of these rooms, should the need in the future to increase the occupancy by 12 beds.

Where is the new location?
The proposed location is on South Shore Road at the eastern most part of the Town-owned parcel where Sherburne Commons is located.

Will there be a second-floor set-up for future expansion?
The second floor is designed for HVAC and other mechanical systems. The facility is being designed to optimize staffing requirements with a ground-level only design for residents and staff.
