South Shore Road Gravity Sewer Extension
Phase I
During the spring and fall of 2022, the Town of Nantucket completed Phase I of the South Shore Road Gravity Sewer Extension Project: the installation of a new “dry” gravity sewer main on South Shore Road between Surfside Road and the Surfside Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTF). During this phase, work on the new Sea Street Pump Station Third Forcemain and an extension of the water main to the Surfside WWTF were also done under separate contracts.
• All of the new dry gravity sewer pipelines have been installed and tested and temporary pavement has been installed. within the existing town right-of-way. Construction of the main gravity sewer line from the WWTF to the fire entrance at Sachem’s Path is now complete, including service connection laterals to property lines and sewer main stubs and manholes to adjacent streets for future extensions. All of the new pipelines have been tested and temporary pavement has been installed.
• Once the new third forcemain project is completed, and the pipeline tested, South Shore Road will be repaved with new curb to curb pavement from Surfside Road to the WWTF.
• Final surface restoration will also include minor adjustments to grading and drainage infrastructure improvements.
• Currently work is being done to repair, replace, and install stormwater drainage on South Shore Road from Surfside Road to the WWTF as a part of the third forcemain project.
Phase II
Phase II of this project will include the design of the new South Shore Road Pump Station, which will be located at the Surfside WWTF. The preliminary design phase, which is currently underway, will determine the location and proposed forcemain connection to the new forcemain manifold being installed as a part of the third forcemain project.
The Town will be seeking further appropriations for the construction of the new pump station at the 2026 Annual Town Meeting, which will allow for timeframes for the bidding and construction of the new pump station to be established. The new South Shore Road gravity sewer line will be released for public connection only once the pump station has been installed, tested, and approved by the Town.
