Travel Demand Forecast Model
The Town is coordinating with TrafInfo, MassDOT, and the Boston region (CTPS) to develop a multi-modal Travel Demand Forecast Model (TDFM) tool with the following goals and objectives:
Project Goals
- To assess local and regional plans, roadway and transit changes, land use changes, and major development projects on the island.
- To assist in developing mitigation measures in response to any impacts on vehicle-miles travel (VMT) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
- To support its goal to reduce single-occupant vehicle travel and encourage greater use of non-auto modes such as transit and other high-occupancy vehicle modes, bicycling and walking on the island.
Project Objectives
- Be sensitive to socioeconomic and demographic changes
- Allow simulating future land use changes and proposed land development projects
- Reflect the multimodal nature of the transportation system on the island including highways and streets, transit system, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities
- Account of limitations of available parking
- Generate the necessary outputs that clearly quantify the impacts of future changes and projects
- Provide the ability to implement transportation system improvements and enhancements to mitigate the impacts
- Serve as an effective tool to be used as part of the island’s planning process including development of long-term transportation plans and air quality analysis as well as serve as a common transparent standard for assessing impacts of future land use changes and planned development projects.
