The current buildings, located at 188 Madaket Road, were constructed in 1978 and are now far beyond their intended useful life.

Six of the eight buildings on-site are undersized and outdated, with many structural, operational, and safety shortcomings that prevent the department from delivering services effectively. Over the past 46 years, DPW's responsibilities have expanded significantly, but the facility has not kept pace with the department’s growing needs.

Key challenges of the existing facility include

• Lack of Space: The facility does not have indoor storage for fleet vehicles, equipment, or essential materials, leaving them exposed to the elements and reducing their lifespan.
• Inadequate Workspaces: Indoor workspaces are congested, limited, and often shared between unrelated activities, creating unsafe and inefficient working conditions.
• Safety Concerns: Both indoor and outdoor areas present significant safety hazards for employees, with the admin office building now essentially “full,” despite the department not being fully staffed.
• Outdated Infrastructure: The buildings are not code-compliant or energy-efficient, increasing operational costs and making it difficult to maintain proper working standards.
• Rising Operational Costs: The deterioration of the facility has led to inefficiencies and increased maintenance costs, negatively impacting the department’s ability to respond swiftly to public works tasks.
