HABs Weekly Report

All monitored ponds are under a Yellow Cautionary status

Harmful Algal Blooms Monitoring Program

Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Update

Harmful algae sampling is ending with the colder weather moving in. This will be the last update for the season.
Signage at ponds will remain yellow due to harmful algae species still being detectable in this weeks (as of 10/09/26) samples. Starting November the signs will be moved into the Green status, as the life cycle of the algae has mostly moved into a dormant phase. The dormant phase is indicative of less to no toxins being produced that could hurt anyone recreating.

All monitored ponds are under a Yellow Cautionary status until November:

  • Long Pond
  • Washing
  • Maxcy
  • Miacomet
  • Gibbs
  • Capaum
  • Stump
  • Tom Nevers
  • Clarks Cove
  • Hummock Pond
  • Sesachacha

What does the yellow mean?
Because harmful algae is still present in the ponds but just at lower concentrations. We still advise caution in using these ponds.
• Reduce prolonged direct contact (like that of swimming or wading) with the water even if the water looks normal colored.
• Thoroughly rinse with freshwater and soap immediately to avoid any skin irritation (this includes pets too) if you do choose to enter the water.
• Do NOT eat anything from the body of water or drink the water (even accidentally).
• If recreation is to be had, use alternatives like boating/kayaking type of activities that are more indirect uses of the pond.

Keep pets safe: Pets can get sick from harmful algal. Do not let them swim in, catch a stick or ball in the water, or drink the water if yellow or red signs are posted.

Signs will be posted near the water at all tested locations. Please check the signs before swimming, boating, fishing, or letting pets near the water.

What the signs mean:
• Green: Water activities are okay. Be careful and avoid drinking the water.
• Yellow: Use caution. Reduce direct contact with water. Boating and kayaking are safer choices.
• Red: Stay out of the water. Do not swim, wade, drink, or touch the water or anything in it.
Thank you for adhering to these suggestions.
