About the Nantucket Hunting Association

The Nantucket Hunting Association (NHA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the traditions of safe, ethical hunting, supporting wildlife conservation, and fostering responsible firearm and archery education. Since its founding in 1997, NHA has played a vital role in the Nantucket community, offering educational programs, youth outreach, and essential training for both civilians and law enforcement.

A Commitment to Education and Safety
The NHA is deeply invested in hunter education and firearm, crossbow, and traditional bow safety. With several volunteer members certified as Range Safety Officers (RSOs) through the National Rifle Association (NRA) educational program, the NHA hosts Massachusetts Hunter Education courses, firearms training for first-time gun owners, self-defense classes, (with and without firearms) and competitive shooting events and fundraisers. A local range will enable the RSOs and Certified Firearms Instructors to maintain their credentials without the need to travel off island. The association also sponsors youth programs, including conservation camps and scouting initiatives, ensuring that the next generation understands the importance of safe, ethical hunting and environmental stewardship. Additionally, the NHA organizes educational seminars and forums on gun safety and wildlife management, creates and distributes informational brochures, and hosts archery hunting education courses.

Support for Law Enforcement & Military Training
By providing a local, safe, and well-maintained shooting facility, NHA will offer firearms training, marksmanship practice, and qualification programs for the Nantucket Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, Environmental Police, Coast Guard, and other governmental agencies—all at no or reduced cost.

A Philanthropic Community Partner
Through fundraising events, educational forums, and partnerships with organizations like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, and Nantucket Public Schools, NHA has demonstrated a strong commitment to giving back to the community. The association has also sponsored youth participation in Jr. Conservation Camps endorsed by the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and contributed to conservation programs, including a wood duck nesting box initiative, a pheasant release program, and organized deer hunts to maintain ecological balance.

Why Support the New Shooting & Archery Range?
A dedicated Nantucket Shooting & Archery Range will provide a safe, accessible space for the public, hunters, and law enforcement to learn, train, practice, and compete. With overwhelming community support—as evidenced by more than two-thirds majority votes at Nantucket’s Annual Town Meetings in 2004 and 2021—this long-awaited project is ready to become a reality.

Join us in preserving tradition, enhancing public safety, and fostering outdoor education by supporting the construction of this much-needed community facility.
