Seven Quick-Build Projects Launching Across the Illinois State Campus and Uptown Normal

Temporary quick-build projects to test street, intersection, or pathway design improvements that focus on safety, accessibility, and awareness

Your feedback on campus safety last spring is sparking real action! This September, the Pedestrian & Roadway Campus Safety Initiative is launching seven "quick-build" projects—temporary, low-cost treatments that let the community test new street designs aimed at improving safety for all road users. These projects will roll out across the Illinois State campus and Uptown Normal, giving you the chance to experience the safety improvements you helped identify.

  1. Street Closure: School Street, College Avenue and Mulberry Street
Temporary closures shorten crosswalks, create more space for pedestrians, and slow traffic
  2. Crosswalk Visibility: University Street Corridor
Temporary, colorful paint designs to improve visibility of crosswalks
  3. Traffic Calming: Beaufort Street at Broadway & Fell Avenue
Temporary low-profile rubber bumps and expanded corners to guide left turning motorists, improve crosswalk visibility, and shorten crosswalks
  4. Mid-Block Crossing: Beaufort Street & School Street
A temporary mid-block crosswalk—a crossing located between street intersections—to increase crossing options on Beaufort Street
  5. Two-Way Bike Lane: College Avenue from School Street to Constitution Trail
Temporary bike lane to improve options for on-street bicycling to and through Illinois State’s campus
  6. Intersection Improvements: Constitution Trail at Locust & Mulberry Streets
Temporary curb bump-outs—extensions of the sidewalk marked with flexible, plastic posts—to make pedestrians more visible, shorten crosswalks, and prevent illegal parking.
  7. Pathway Education: College Avenue On-Campus Pathway
Temporary decals on the southern sidewalk to promote shared responsibility, safe travel behaviors, and compliance with the campus dismount zone

Depending on the project, they will last from one day to a few months, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation through the fall semester.
