Illinois State University and the Town of Normal partnered to launch the Pedestrian & Roadway Campus Safety Initiative
Recent tragic crashes and rising safety concerns around the Illinois State University campus demand action. The Town of Normal and Illinois State are partnering to improve transportation safety for everyone—pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and more.
What We’re Doing:
Addressing Safety Head-On: We’re tackling traffic incidents by using data-driven strategies to improve key areas, reduce risks, and prevent crashes before they happen.
Building Together: Campus safety is a shared responsibility. We’re engaging the community—students, faculty, staff, and Normal residents—to ensure the solutions meet everyone’s needs and reflect the voices of those most affected.
Ongoing Improvements: Improvements are already underway, including upgrades to key intersections. But there’s more to be done. Through this process, we’ll set up multiple pilot projects at identified high-risk intersections and evaluate new safety solutions for all users. We’ll use data and community feedback on these pilot projects to form recommendations for permanent infrastructure improvements.
Promoting Safe and Active Mobility: We’re fostering awareness of how to navigate campus safely, regardless of your mode of transportation. The campus is a shared space, and everyone—whether walking, biking, or driving—plays a role in creating a safer environment. We’ll also encourage walking and biking, recognizing their benefits for physical and mental well-being and enhanced community connection.
Safety starts with you. No matter how you travel, we all play a role in making our campus safer. Learn more about the Pedestrian & Roadway Campus Safety Initiative and how you can get involved.
