Greenest Citizen Award

Do you know someone who actively shares and celebrates the importance of plants and trees? Perhaps it’s a neighbor who has transformed their yard with native, Florida-Friendly landscaping, reduces water use, protects wildlife habitat and encourages others to do the same. Maybe it’s someone who volunteers their time, educates others about sustainable practices or quietly leads by example in caring for our natural environment.

The Greenest Citizen Award program was created to recognize a North Port resident who has gone above and beyond to protect, preserve, and enhance our local environment. This award honors individuals who make intentional choices to create a more sustainable household, neighborhood, or broader community; whether through planting native species, conserving water, reducing waste, supporting pollinators or promoting environmental awareness.

What makes this program special is that it is truly community-driven. The process begins with open nominations, where residents are invited to submit the names of individuals they believe exemplify outstanding environmental stewardship. Once nominations are collected, the program moves into a formal community voting phase, giving the entire North Port community the opportunity to participate in selecting this year’s Greenest Citizen.

Program Timeline:
• Open Nominations: March 2 – March 16
• Community Voting: March 20 – April 3
• Winner Announcement & Tree Planting Ceremony: April 22 at the Greenest Citizen Event

Arbor Day serves as the perfect moment to celebrate these efforts, reminding us that environmental responsibility begins at home and grows outward into our neighborhoods and parks. It is a time to reflect on the vital role trees and native landscapes play in improving air quality, reducing flooding, supporting wildlife and enhancing the beauty and resilience of North Port.

By honoring those who take that extra step, we shine a light on the everyday actions that collectively make a lasting impact. Each tree planted becomes a lasting symbol of community stewardship, growing alongside North Port for generations to come.
