Feedback - Active Travel

Initial feedback from our Ryedale-wide active travel map and survey.

Your Environment & Community

Initial feedback from our Ryedale wide active travel map and survey

We would like to thank everyone who provided feedback through the active travel behaviour survey and map. Your input will directly support short and longer-term active travel strategies for the district.

Behaviour Survey

Our active travel behaviour survey received 141 individual responses. On average, our citizens felt capable of walking short journeys around their local area and walked four times a week. The main motivation for walking was focused on the health and environmental benefits, in addition to reducing the number of vehicles on roads and saving time by not having to park vehicles.

Left) Weekly 1 mile or less journeys made on foot. Right) Identified opportunities to support more short journeys on foot.

The survey also identified a range of barriers to active travel. These ranged from existing pavement/footpaths being too narrow, being not safe at times, the requirement for more crossing, and the need for better information around walking routes and green spaces. Areas identified to support increased engagement and opportunities for active travel are shown above (right).

Active Travel Map

Our Ryedale-wide active travel map received 124 individual comments, with the most significant number of responses from Malton, Norton, Pickering, Ebberson and Kirby Misperton. The purpose of our active travel map was to give a clear sense of detail to our active travel engagement, highlighting areas for improvement and areas where citizens already feel supported.

On average most citizens felt walking routes required improvement to support them in active travel, as below (left). Key themes evolving from our map feedback focused on better connectivity between footpaths, more crossings, green spaces and clearer route information.

Left) Average walking route ratings by town across Ryedale, including the number of comments for each. Right) Identified themes to support increased engagement in short journeys being made on foot.

Project Next Steps

Building upon the strong response received from our citizens to active travel, we will now identify short-term local support to encourage increased engagement in active travel, whilst using the feedback collected to inform longer-term development for Ryedale going forward.

Your feedback will help shape and build the business case for:

  • New cycle and footpaths for Ryedale.
  • Support public transport schemes such as the Levelling-Up bid for a 2nd platform and bridge works at Malton Railway Station.
  • Better connectivity between Ryedale’s towns and villages by active travel.
