Flat Creek Boardwalk Repairs
PROJECT IS COMPLETE - 12/22/2023
The tornadoes that came through our area in January of 2023 did not directly hit Peachtree City; however, high winds did negatively impact many trees in the Flat Creek Nature Area adjacent to the Public Works department. These winds caused a tree to fall and destroy one section of southern boardwalk and weakened and damaged several other trees. The destroyed section of boardwalk on the southern side has been repaired; however, the boardwalk has remained closed due safety reasons as many trees in the vicinity are damaged and may fall on the boardwalk and/or visitors at any time. Subsequently, another tree has fallen and destroyed a section of northern boardwalk adjacent to the Amphitheater.
Staff has met several times on site with the City's tree removal contractor to come up with a plan of action to tactically remove damaged trees and limbs. There are several large trees that will need to be taken down and removed along with several dead and overhanging limbs in order to safely reopen the boardwalk. Since this is a wetland area the use of heavy equipment will be impractical. Much of the work will be hand work with carting out sections of the trees and limbs piece by piece along the boardwalk.
During the tree and limb removal process, several sections of boardwalk will need to be disassembled and put back. This boardwalk disassemble/reassemble process is required in order to prevent the larger leaning trees from crushing the boardwalk during the removal process.
During the June 15, 2023 City Council meeting, discussions occurred relating to the repair, replacement, reconfigure or removal of the northern and southern sections of the boardwalk.
During the August 3, 2023 City Council meeting, Council approved to have all hazardous trees felled in place and the entire length of the boardwalk inspected and repaired in the amount of $113,675.
The boardwalk is now reopened for all path users.
