Harrison Street Corridor Study and Improvement Projects

The Harrison Street Corridor (HSC) - which includes South Harrison Street, Harrison Street, Harrison Street North, and Ewing Street (between Harrison Street North and US Route 206) – is the subject of a Complete Streets study to identify potential safety and mobility improvements along this very important corridor.

Consistent with the Master Plan, the study recommends improvements to prioritize safe bicycle and pedestrian movement including bicycle network connection using lower stress, parallel roadway systems. Traffic calming and the use of the Federal Highway Administration Proven Safety Countermeasures are also central features of the recommendations. Portions of the HSC study area are under the jurisdiction of Mercer County (100 feet north of Western Way to the D&R Canal), the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) (intersections at NJ 27 / Nassau Street and US Route 206 / State Road), and Princeton University (Broadmead Avenue and Lake Lane), which means that some of the study recommendations will be subject to their approvals.

The Department of Infrastructure & Operations proposes the following initial project phasing:

  1. NJ 27 / Nassau Street to Franklin Avenue – The major design features include a center roadway median, reduced lane widths, traffic signal timing upgrades, special friction course pavement material for better vehicle stopping, and sidewalk and crosswalk improvements. Princeton received a NJDOT Municipal Aid grant in the amount of $818,256 for this project.

  2. Franklin Avenue to Bunn Drive – The major design features include roundabouts at Valley Road, Terhune Road, and Bunn Drive, a road diet to remove two lanes between Clearview and Bunn Drive, reduced lane widths, sidewalks, and bike lanes.

  3. Clearview to Terhune Pilot Project – The proposed road diet between Clearview and Bunn Drive can be created by repurposing the outer southbound and northbound vehicle lanes. Instead of a travel lane, the paved area can provide bicycle and pedestrian facilities with a generous buffer from vehicles.

This list will be updated as additional project phases are added.
