Food Scraps Drop-Off Program

The Municipality of Princeton and its residents are committed to sustainability and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of a community food scraps drop-off program. Residents of Princeton can participate in the community food scraps drop-off program after passing a brief quiz on sorting food waste. Food scraps collected from this program are delivered to a local food recycling facility that creates both energy and a soil amendment as a final product, in alignment with the EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy.

Princeton currently has ten food scrap drop-off sites -

  • Municipal Building at 400 Witherspoon Street
  • Monument Hall at One Monument Drive
  • Riverside at 63 Riverside Drive
  • Littlebrook at 39 Magnolia Lane
  • Johnson Park at 413 General Johnson Road
  • Griggs Farm at 260 Griggs Drive
  • Thanet Circle at 29 Thanet Circle
  • Mercer Road Pump Station at 883 Mercer Road
  • Former PFARS at 237 North Harrison Street
  • Westminster Community College at 110 Walnut Lane

Princeton’s Climate Action Plan includes Objective 10 to reduce the lifecycle emissions from the disposal of waste generated by the Princeton community by evaluating all waste streams from all sectors and implementing a plan to save money and reduce emissions. The evaluation of Princeton’s waste streams indicates that diverting food scraps from landfill will reduce Princeton’s carbon emissions by 8.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per food scrap drop site each year. An analysis of possible food scrap programs, including backyard composting, curbside pickup, and other methods, demonstrates that providing centralized drop-off locations for the collection of food scraps is the most economical and sustainable solution for Princeton.
