Zoning By-law

The Township of Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards is in the process of creating it's first comprehensive zoning by-law for the entire Township.

About Zoning By-laws

A zoning by-law controls the use of land in your community. It states exactly:

  • how land may be used
  • where buildings and other structures can be located
  • the types of buildings that are permitted and how they may be used
  • the lot sizes and dimensions, parking requirements, building heights, and setbacks from the street or other features (i.e. environemtnally sensitive areas, industrial uses, mineral aggregate resourses).
  • The Zoning By-law enact the general land use policies contained in the official plan.
  • Zoning bylaws put the plan into effect and provide for its day-to-day administration. They contain specific requirements that are legally enforceable. Construction or new development that doesn’t comply with a zoning bylaw is not allowed, and the municipality will refuse to issue a building permit.

The comprehensive zoning by-law divides the municipality into different land use zones, with detailed maps. The by-law specifies the permitted uses (i.e., residential, commercial, environmental protection) and the required standards in each zone. The Township is required to update its zoning by-laws within three years after the approval of the County of Renfrew Official Plan update. All previously adopted zoning by-laws will be repealed when the new by-law is approved.

Public Open House and Public Meeting - Date TBD

The Planning Act requires that the municipliaty hold a minimum of one Public Open House and one Public Meeting. At this point the date of the public sessions have not been formally scheduled. The purpose of the open house is to provide an opportunity for anyone to view a draft of the by-law, talk to staff, and obtain information on the by-law. The public meeting will be the opportunity for anyone to address any comments to the KHR council for their consideration. You are encouraged share your views early in the planning process by making a written submission for staff and council to consider when drafting the new by-law. Formal notice of the Open House and the Public Meeting will be provided with a future tax bill mailout to all property owners, be posted in the local newspaper, be posted on the Township website/facebook page, and will be also be provided to any person who requests the notice.
