Every year, people in Roanoke lose family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to preventable traffic crashes on our roads. Vision Zero is a commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. In December 2020, Roanoke City Council committed to “create and implement a Vision Zero Action Plan” in City Plan 2040. Thanks to grant funding secured through the Federal Safe Streets for All program, we’re are beginning this process!

For the last century, our transportation system has been built on the belief that these crashes are accidents – events no one can fully prevent or predict.

The Roanoke Safety Action Plan is a paradigm shift in how the City thinks about roadway safety. It will lay out a new set of principles for engineering roads, educating travelers, and creating a sense of collective responsibility. The City of Roanoke is taking action and committing to zero traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2035.

Safe Streets for All Advisory Committee Kickoff Meeting

At this initial meeting the City of Roanoke Trasportation division will introduce the Vision Zero project to the advisory committee and ask the committee to share their thoughts about traffic safety in Roanoke, and what the most important things to do to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes in the city are.

The Toole Design team will present their initial findings of an analysis of recent crash data, and together we will begin discussing ways in which each of us can help move this initiative forward in the coming months.

Up to four additional meetings between now and the end of the year are anticipated as we work with our consultant team at Toole Design to develop a compelling and feasible action plan to achieve this ambitious goal of Zero fatalities and serious injuries on our city streets.
