Roanoke Rolls Out Temporary Bike Lanes for a Smoother Ride to GoFest
The City of Roanoke is installing temporary bike lanes on Jefferson Street, between Elm Avenue and Riverside Circle SE, to improve access for people attending GoFest by bicycle or scooter. In partnership with Toole Design and LMC Safety Barricade, the City will use barrels, tape, and signs to create separated bike lanes from October 18-20, during the festival.
The design aims to minimize impact on traffic operations, with only one turn restriction: drivers heading south on Jefferson who wish to turn left onto Old Woods Road will need to turn at Old Whitmore Road instead. Additional cones, tape, and signage at intersections will ensure that bicyclists and pedestrians are clearly visible to turning motorists and that speeds are kept low. These measures will minimize potential conflicts between turning traffic and people on the sidewalk and in the bike lanes.
