J. Pleasant Hines Park: Celebrating Legacy

J. Pleasant Hines Park: Celebrating Legacy

Southern Pines is working to enhance the quality and accessibility of our parks system with updated signage, improved wayfinding, and revitalized entrances. As part of this work, the Town Council and staff have had discussions about whether Pool Park is still the right name for such an important community space.

With its pool, splash pad, playground, Dream Court, picnic shelter, and multipurpose field, this park is more than a single feature—it’s a vibrant destination serving a variety of recreational needs. It’s a well-loved gathering place where neighbors come together all year long.

As part of that conversation, Council has expressed strong interest in renaming the park to reflect its deeper meaning and the legacy of the neighborhood in which its located. At their June 24, 2025 work session, Council reviewed a number of potential names that reflected the history and significance of the West Southern Pines community. The Council chose the name J. Pleasant Hines Park in honor of the first Mayor of the former incorporated Town of West Southern Pines.

While West Southern Pines is now part of Southern Pines, its history and leadership remain a proud chapter in our community’s story—and Council sees this as a meaningful way to honor that legacy. Mayor Hines was a leader during a pivotal era in the history of Southern Pines and this recognizes his lasting impact and legacy. This name also highlights our shared heritage and ensures our parks continue to be places of pride for current and future generations.

At their July 22, 2025 meeting, Council plans to formally vote on renaming the park as: J. Pleasant Hines Park

We’re sharing this in advance to keep the community informed and give everyone a chance to connect with the history behind this decision. If you or your family have memories, stories, or photos that shed light on Mayor Hines' life and impact, we would love to hear from you. We plan to include a sign at the park that shares the meaning behind its name and the role that Mayor Hines plays in Southern Pines history.

Please email Assistant Town Manager, Jessica Roth, at jroth@southernpines.net or drop off a written note or photo at the Community Development building, located at 801 SE Service Rd.
