Bagshot 20 mph speed limit zone, weight restriction and traffic calming proposals

Background

Residents and the Parish Council have raised concerns about vehicle speeds and road safety in and around Bagshot village centre, noting that excessive speeds make the area feel unsafe. They also report drivers using village roads as a cut‑through instead of following the signed route via the A322 Bagshot Bypass and A30 London Road, with Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) causing particular safety and environmental concerns.
Pedestrian safety is another key concern raised, especially at the Guildford Road Zebra crossings. Parents and carers report conditions often feel unsafe for children walking, cycling or scooting to Connaught Junior School, both at the crossings and along surrounding routes.
Proposed Improvements
In response to the concerns raised, a series of measures are proposed to improve safety for all road users, reduce vehicle speeds, and discourage through‑traffic in Bagshot village centre.

The proposals include:

a) Extending the existing 20mph speed limit in the village centre.
b) Extending the existing 7.5‑tonne environmental weight limit in the village centre.
c) Upgrades to pedestrian crossings and installing traffic calming on Guildford Road and Bridge Road, as summarised below:
•Placing all existing Zebra crossings in Guildford Road and Bridge Road on new raised tables.
•Installing speed cushions on both roads.
•Narrowing the road at the Bridge Road Zebra crossing to make it easier and safer to use by allowing pedestrians to cross in a single movement.

Objectives

The proposed measures build on the existing 20mph speed limit and 7.5‑tonne limits already in place in parts of central Bagshot and aim to create a safer environment for all road users that helps support and encourage sustainable travel.
