Why are we proposing the speed limit reduction scheme?
Reduction in people being injured:
The main reason for reducing the speed limits is to reduce the number of accidents/collisions and casualties.
Between January 2020 and December 2025, there have been 12 accidents/collisions, resulting in 14 people being injured, two seriously.
These figures include six pedal cyclists (one serious), two motor cyclists (one serious).
Additionally, the 40mph section of Portsmouth Road, near the access road to Claremont Fan Court School, there have been ten accidents/collisions, resulting in 11 people being injured. These include five pedal cycle and one pedestrian casualty.
What are the existing vehicle speeds?
As can be seen from the plan showing the speed survey locations, vehicle speeds along the various sections of the existing 50mph speed limits in A307 Portsmouth Road, Esher/Cobham, mean (average) vehicle speeds range between 37.8mph to 40.3mph.
The aim is to reduce the higher speeders to this range. This will improve safety for everyone accessing Claremont Fan Court School.
The next stages?
The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) / statutory consultation will be conducted later in the year. This provides an additional opportunity to provide feedback.
