Surrey LCWIP

Making it easier to walk and cycle in Surrey

What is a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan?

Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs) provide a strategic approach to identifying cycling and walking improvements required at the local level.

Based on the latest technical guidance and best practice, an LCWIP helps to recognise where new or improved walking and cycling facilities would be most beneficial and the type of facilities that are most appropriate.

LCWIPs primarily focus on ‘utility’ trips such as those made to work, education, transport hubs (e.g. rail stations), healthcare and retail.

Why are we developing LCWIPs?

Surrey County Council shares the Government’s ambition to make cycling and walking a natural choice for shorter journeys, or as part of longer journeys. Once established, our LCWIPs will provide a key tool for deciding how and where future investment in walking and cycling improvements will be prioritised to help meet this ambition.

To act on the Climate Emergency, Surrey County Council is working towards a goal of net zero carbon by 2050. 46% of Surrey's carbon emissions are transport-related and, as part of our Climate Change Strategy , investing in initiatives and infrastructure to encourage more people to walk and cycle are an important priority in achieving this vision.

In addition to carbon reduction, increased rates of walking and cycling have the potential to bring significant economic, social and public health benefits to local communities in Surrey.

Current developments

We are currently developing new LCWIPs for the following areas and would welcome your comments on barriers to walking or cycling and any suggestions for improvements via our interactive map:

  • Tandridge District
  • Woking Borough

LCWIPs have now been completed for the areas listed below and can be viewed on our Plans to improve walking and cycling web page:

  • Woking Town
  • Farnham Town
  • Elmbridge Borough
  • Epsom & Ewell Borough
  • Mole Valley District
  • Reigate & Banstead Borough
  • Runnymede Borough
  • Spelthorne Borough
  • Surrey Heath Borough
  • Waverley Borough

Work is also expected to complete shortly the LCWIP for Guildford Borough.

Have your say

We want to understand where there are existing issues or barriers in your area that make it difficult for you to walk or cycle and if you have any suggestions for improvements.

You can get involved by viewing our interactive map and clicking ‘Have your say’. You will be asked to place a ‘pin’ in the map before providing your comments on the specific issue and how you feel it could be made better.

By sending us your feedback during the early stages of the LCWIP process it gives us the best opportunity to consider these suggestions for inclusion in our planning. We will subsequently consult on the proposed routes and schemes that are identified through the LCWIP process as they are taken forward for further development.

We plan to regularly develop and review LCWIPs across the county and the interactive map will remain open for comments across all areas. This means that, even if an LCWIP isn’t currently in development for a certain place, we will continue to receive your ideas for information when we next come to review the LCWIP for the area.
