Engagement Report & Next Steps

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views on the proposed 20mph scheme on Parsonage Road and surrounding roads in Cranleigh. We greatly appreciate your involvement and the feedback provided.

Following a detailed review of all comments received during the public engagement period, officers have carefully considered both the support expressed and the concerns raised.

What We Heard

The engagement generated a good level of response and reflected a broad range of views, with overall support for the proposed scheme.

• Supportive comments focused on the potential to improve safety—particularly for children and around schools—as well as calming traffic and creating a more consistent 20mph environment across the area. Respondents also highlighted benefits for walking, cycling, and reducing the risk of collisions. Some also expressed a desire to extend the scheme further to other roads in Cranleigh.
• Concerns mainly related to the perceived effectiveness of a sign-only scheme, particularly where existing speeds are already considered low, and whether drivers would comply without enforcement. Parking pressures were frequently raised as a more significant issue, along with road condition and maintenance. Some respondents also suggested alternative or additional measures, including crossings and traffic calming features.

No new issues were identified that had not already been considered during the scheme’s design. While some requests were made for measures beyond the scope of this scheme—such as wider parking controls or additional infrastructure—these would require separate processes, funding, and further assessment.

As a result, it is recommended that the scheme is progressed as proposed, with no amendments required.

Next Steps

A draft Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will now be prepared and advertised for statutory consultation. This formal legal process provides a further opportunity for anyone to submit representations before a final decision is made on whether the 20mph scheme will be implemented.
