What do we mean by biodiversity?
Biodiversity, short for biological diversity, refers to the variety of species inhabiting the natural environment, encompassing various plants, birds, and mammals, insects, fungi and microorganisms. Biodiversity is the foundation for all essential elements in nature that are vital for our survival.
Within ecosystems there are intricate relationships that support the survival of each organism, the loss of a producer or consumer can cause entire systems to collapse. We require a diverse food chain to ensure we have a balanced ecosystem; we are reliant on these established systems for our own survival.
Continued pressure from humans and climate change puts this delicate balance at risk.
This initiative aims to enrich our natural surroundings by establishing and offering fresh habitats for wildlife to inhabit, connecting and creating green corridors. Potential endeavours include creating wildflower meadows, developing pollinator pit stops, establishing ponds, and setting up accommodations such as bug hotels and bird houses.
We invite you to share your insights on what measures you are already taking to make space for wildlife! Your input will contribute to aiding nature in fostering green corridors in the entire county!
