Pooley Green shopping parade (Area 1)

Find out about the proposals for Pooley Green shopping parade

Egham Hythe Local Street Improvements

Pooley Green shopping parade

This location is at the centre of the Egham Hythe Local Street Improvements zone. Following feedback to the early (stage one) engagement, proposals have been developed to make it more pedestrian friendly, make it safer and easier to cross the roads, provide seating, provide cycle parking, improve the public realm, and generally make it a more attractive place to dwell and spend time in the local community.

Two draft design options have been developed for this location and can be viewed via the plans provided below.

Proposals in both options include:

  • Improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists across Thorpe Lea Road and Pooley Green Road. These provide safer crossings to access the Recreation Ground and shopping parade.
  • New public realm space in the area between the Pooley Green Recreation Ground car park and Pooley Green Road. In this space a focal tree is proposed as well as seating.
  • Cycle parking outside the shops.
  • Re-allocation of service road space and some of the short stay parking provision outside of the shops. This would enable space for an improved crossing across Pooley Green Road, cycle parking and space for public realm improvements which could include planting, sustainable drainage features, seating, and/or other appropriate measures. We would welcome views on what this space could include. Although both options reduce parking capacity, there is sufficient spare capacity in the Pooley Green Recreation Ground car park and the scheme designs would improve the walkway between this car park and the shops.
  • Improvements at the bus stops including raising the kerbs to make it easier to get on and off a bus.

Differences between the two options:

The main difference between the two options is the impact on the service road space and short stay parking provision outside of the shops.

  • Option 1 would remove the service road entirely and reduce the parking provision from 11 vehicle spaces to up to 5 vehicle spaces, including 2 disabled (blue badge holder) bays. This would provide more space for public realm improvements.
  • Option 2 would retain a section of the service road and reduce the parking provision from 11 vehicle spaces to up to 9 vehicle spaces, including 2 disabled (blue badge holder) bays. There would be much more limited scope for public realm improvements outside the shops in option 2.

Option 2 also proposes to introduce a section of cycle track to segregate pedestrians and cyclists in the area between the two proposed crossings. The cycle track proposal would be feasible in both options.

Please provide your feedback on the proposals via our survey.
