Thorpe Road and Thorpe Lea Road (Area 2)

Find out about the proposals for Thorpe Road, Thorpe Lea Road, Medlake Road and Tempest Road

Egham Hythe Local Street Improvements

Thorpe Road and Thorpe Lea Road

The roads included within this area are Thorpe Road, Thorpe Lea Road, Medlake Road and Tempest Road.

Design proposals in this area include (please see the PDF files linked below for plans of all the proposals):

  • Extending and widening the shared use footway/cycleway along Thorpe Road and Thorpe Road. The proposals extend existing cycle infrastructure so that it would become continuous between the A308/Thorpe Road roundabout and the New Wickham Lane/Thorpe Lea Road roundabout. A priority cycle corridor has been identified here in the Runnymede Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.
  • Side road junction improvements along Thorpe Road and Thorpe Lea Road including ensuring tactile paving and dropped kerbs are provided where required, building out footways to tighten some of the junction bell mouths thereby reducing crossing distances, and installing raised tables to slow vehicles travelling through the junctions and to provide a continuous level surface for pedestrians (and cyclists where shared use is proposed).
  • The side road junction improvements include changes at the Thorpe Lea Road and Glebe Road junction. A more detailed plan for this junction is provided below. The improvements include widening and resurfacing of the footways on Thorpe Lea Road at the junction and installing bollards to prevent footway parking. Footway parking provides an obstacle for pedestrians and reduces accessibility, especially for disabled users. A raised table is proposed at the junction as well as reducing the length double yellow lines on Glebe Road to increase on-carriageway parking capacity.
  • New crossing points along Thorpe Road and Thorpe Lea Road including parallel and toucan (signalised) crossings on raised tables. These would also serve as traffic calming features.
  • Relocating and removing street furniture to reduce obstructions on footways.
  • Improvements at the bus stops including raising the kerbs to make it easier to get on and off a bus.
  • It is proposed that as well as along residential roads in Egham Hythe, a 20mph speed limit is also implemented along Thorpe Road and Thorpe Lea Road between A308/Thorpe Road roundabout and just west of Medlake Road. More information can be found on the 20mph speed limit area tile.

Two options have been provided for this Area plan. The differences between the two options are:

  • In option 1 the southern footway along Thorpe Lea Road between Tempest Road and Medlake Road is not proposed to be shared by pedestrians and cyclists. Instead cyclists are directed to cycle on-carriageway along Tempest Road and Medlake Road, which are quiet residential roads. This option is proposed because the total footway and carriageway width along Thorpe Lea Road is particularly narrow between Tempest Road and Medlake Road and a shared use facility would be substandard, with a width of only 2m for a short length.
  • In option 2 the southern footway along Thorpe Lea Road between Tempest Road and Medlake Road is proposed to be shared by pedestrians and cyclists. There would be a pinchpoint where the footway/cycleway narrows to 2m wide for a short length. Tempest Road and Medlake road would not be signed as an on-carriageway cycle route.

Please provide your feedback on the proposals via our survey.
