From Monday 9 February, works to improve the existing raised table and informal pedestrian crossing on The Street, and improvements to the green space north of the Nisa Local store will begin.

The complete these works, a short section of The Street will be closed 24 hours a day from Monday 9 February for 2 weeks. The closure will run from just south of the entrance to Lambourne Way to the parking bay outside 111 The Street. From Wednesday 25 February, temporary traffic lights will be in place on the same section of road, for approximately 8 weeks.

Access to homes and businesses will be maintained when it is safe to do so. If you need assistance, please speak to a member of our site team who are committed to keeping disruption to a minimum.

Upcoming works

• Creating an area of green space with seating for public use (known as a pocket park) on the grassed area to the north of the Nisa Local store, expected to start February 2026.

This phase of the scheme has been designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents.

We had initially planned to make improvements to the roundabout at the junction of The Street and Poyle Road as part of this phase. However, following a recent review of the scheme’s cost and available funding, it became clear that increasing construction costs means we’re unable to deliver all of the improvements without significantly exceeding the approved budget. As a result, we will no longer be constructing the roundabout improvement works at this time.

The roundabout improvements were the most expensive and complex part of the scheme due to the road closures, traffic management and utility works that would be required. Taking the roundabout out of the project ensures the remaining improvements, including traffic calming, bus stop upgrades, and the new pocket park, can be delivered within budget, while still providing meaningful benefits to the community.

We understand this may be disappointing, however, should suitable developments come forward in the area, we will work with developers to explore if they could fund the roundabout improvements.

Completed works

Phase one of the planned improvement are now complete, including:

• Introduction of raised tables on The Street and improved uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point located north of the Manor House flats.
• Installation of a priority give way system and speed cushion on Oxenden Road
• Installation of a new priority give way system designed to slow vehicle speeds as they enter the village, relocation of the 30mph speed limit, resurfacing and two new streetlights on Poyle Road

Background 

In 2022 Surrey County Council shared proposals to improve road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists and to better utilise green space in Tongham. Since the initial engagement, plans have been developed to deliver the scheme.

Delivery of the scheme will be carried out in phases.

Updated plans July 2023

In March 2023 Surrey County Council shared plans for the first phase of planned improvement works in Tongham. The plans outlined changes to The Street, including the introduction of a series of raised tables, improvements to the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point north of the Manor House flats and a footway parking ban. The plans also outlined changes to Oxenden Road including road narrowing and the addition of a speed cushion. Since sharing these plans some minor changes have been made, including the repositioning of a speed cushion and changes to the drainage. Please see the updated drawings below for details.
