Ashford Town Centre
Surrey County Council is working with Spelthorne Borough Council to transform Ashford town centre into a thriving destination. We are proposing some improvements along Church Road. We plan to improve pedestrian spaces, enhance greenery, encourage social interaction, and create more flexible and multi-use public spaces. These changes aim to refresh the town centre and make it a safer and more welcoming place for everyone.

Project Overview
Surrey County Council is working with Spelthorne Borough Council to transform Ashford Town Centre into a thriving destination which is safe, attractive, economically strong, and socially vibrant.
Ashford has many great qualities and strengths, but it also faces some challenges. We are proposing some improvements along Church Road to make the town more welcoming, enhance public spaces so they are more accessible and enjoyable, and provide better support for local businesses and communities.
Our Vision
- Develop a safe and attractive town centre with high-quality public spaces that encourage more people to spend time there whilst connecting people with nature
- Support a diverse mix of uses in the town centre, including cultural, social, commercial, and leisure
- Encourage active and healthy lifestyles
- Integrate innovative solutions to help meet climate goals
Engagement
As the project has developed, we have heard from residents and stakeholders through a range of activities, including:
- Attended the 2023 Christmas market to speak to people in person, gather insight and identify common concerns
- Launched the digital chatbot campaign for 3 months in summer 2024 to collect feedback
- Established a Stakeholder Working Group in early 2025 to maintain ongoing dialogue with residents, community and business representatives, and councillors
- Wider public engagement was held from September to November 2025 where we spoke to residents in person, through public events, and also online through our survey. The feedback from this engagement can be viewed here.
These activities have helped us understand local concerns and what improvements that the community hopes to see.
