Next Stage: Statutory Consultation (TRO) Now Open

Public engagement showed clear overall support for the proposed 20mph scheme. Following a review of the feedback received, the proposal has now progressed to the statutory consultation stage.

George Abbot School, Guildford - Proposed 20mph scheme

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views on the proposed 20mph scheme on the residential roads around George Abbot School. We greatly appreciate your involvement and the feedback provided.
Following a detailed review of all comments received during the public engagement period, officers have carefully considered both the strong support expressed and the concerns raised.

What We Heard
The engagement generated a good level of response and reflected a broad range of views, with a clear majority of respondents supporting the proposed scheme.

  • Most respondents supported the proposal, highlighting the potential benefits of improving safety for children travelling to and from George Abbot School, reducing vehicle speeds, creating safer conditions for people walking and cycling, and establishing a more consistent speed environment across the estate.
  • Concerns focused primarily on school-related parking and congestion, with many respondents feeling these issues posed a greater safety concern than vehicle speeds. Respondents also questioned whether lower speed limits should be focused around schools, whether existing traffic speeds are already appropriate, and whether a sign-only 20mph limit would be effective without enforcement.
  • Some respondents suggested additional measures, including parking controls, School Streets, park-and-stride schemes, and the inclusion of additional roads such as London Road and New Inn Lane.
  • Overall, no new issues were identified that had not already been taken into account during the development of the scheme, and the roads remain suitable for inclusion within the proposed sign-only 20mph scheme.

Next Steps: TRO Statutory Consultation
The proposal is now subject to a formal consultation as part of the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process. This is a legal requirement before any change to a speed limit can be introduced. During the consultation period, anyone may submit objections or statements of support. All comments received before the consultation closes will be considered before a final decision is made.

The consultation is open until **4 December 2026. **
