Thank you to everyone who took time to share their views on the proposed School Street for Cranmere Primary School, Esher. We value your involvement and the feedback provided.

Following a detailed review of all comments received during the public engagement period, officers have carefully considered both the support expressed and the concerns raised.

What you said

The feedback demonstrates strong overall support for the scheme, particularly in relation to its primary objective of improving safety for children walking along Arran Way to access Cranmere School.   Many respondents – particularly parents and local residents – highlight existing concerns around congestion, unsafe parking, poor driver behaviour and limited visibility and widely view the proposal as a necessary intervention to address these issues.

There is also clear support for the use of ANPR cameras and for the scheme’s role in encouraging active travel and reducing traffic levels during peak times. Respondents frequently recognise the potential wider benefits for pupils, families, and residents including improved air quality and a calmer local environment.

However, the feedback also highlights a number of important concerns and areas of refinement. The most significant issue raised is the potential for traffic displacement onto surrounding roads, with fears this could worsen congestion, parking pressure and safety in those areas.  Further themes include requests for greater clarity on exemptions for residents, as well as mixed views on the proposed operating times, with suggestions for both extensions and adjustments to better reflect school activities.

Overall, the findings indicate that there is clear support for the principle and intent of the School Street, successful implementation will depend on careful monitoring during the trial period, clear communication and a willingness to introduce supporting measures to address potential displacement and operational concerns.

Officers Recommendation

Taking into account the full range of views expressed during the public engagement, Surrey County Council is satisfied that the proposal would deliver clear and meaningful improvements to road safety outside Cranmere School, directly addressing the issues most commonly raised by respondents. On this basis, and recognising the strong level of support for improving safety for children, it has been recommended to the local County Councillor that the School Street be implemented.

The results and feedback from this engagement have been shared with your local County Councillor and a decision has been made to proceed with the implementation of the School Street for Cranmere School.
