Roads around Shawfield Primary School, Ash

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their views on the proposed 20mph scheme on the residential roads around Shawfield Primary School. We greatly appreciate your involvement and the feedback provided.

Following a detailed review of all comments received during the public engagement period, officers have carefully considered both the support expressed and the concerns raised.

What We Heard

The engagement generated a good level of response and reflected a broad range of views, with overall support for the proposed scheme.

  • Supportive comments highlighted potential safety benefits - particularly for children - and the value of calmer conditions on narrow, parked-up residential roads.  Several respondents also requested that the proposed 20mph area be expanded, including Star Lane, as this road is used as a ‘rat-run’.
  • Concerns mainly centred on the perceived effectiveness of the lower speed limit, whether current speeds were already low, and that wider issues, such as parking, are not addressed by this proposed scheme.

No new issues were identified that had not already been taken into account during the scheme’s design.  As a result, it is recommended that the scheme be progressed and amended to include Star Lane.

Next Steps

A draft Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will now be prepared and advertised for statutory consultation. This formal legal process provides a further opportunity for anyone to submit representations before a final decision is made on whether the 20mph scheme will be implemented.

We will share a further update here once the TRO has been formally advertised.
